Bio
Maeve “Glasgow” Mackinnon was described last year by The Herald as possessing "a truly stunning voice". Nominated for Gaelic Singer of the year at the 2008 Trad Music Awards, she was voted “Up and Coming Artist of the year” at 2007's Trad Music Awards and was a finalist in 2005's BBC Radio Scotland “Young Traditional Musician of the year” award. She is also, confusingly, one of two Gaelic singers who share the same name! .."From the crunchy opening strings chords and the cross-rhythmic tension, you know an unusual musical intelligence is at work" - Norman Chalmers, Scotland on Sunday (June 2007) ..A learner of Gaelic since the age of 17, Maeve Mackinnon studied Gaelic song at the RSAMD, graduating with Honours in 2004. She attended the pioneering Gaelic college "Sabhal Mor Ostaig" from 2005- 2006 and released her debut solo album "Don't Sing Lovesongs" in 2007. The album fused Gaelic song with folksongs from Scotland, Ireland and the US, was released on the Footstompin label and produced by multi-instrumentalists Duncan Lyall and Ali Hutton. It was met with widespread critical acclaim on its release, and came to the attention of Celtic Connections festival director Donald Shaw, who invited Mackinnon to perform a prestigious "Classic Albums" gig at Celtic Connections festival 2008. The gig, a double bill with fiddler Lauren MacColl, proved to be a sell-out and earned them a 5 star review from The Herald, describing Mackinnon and MacColl as "surely both destined for greatness". ..***** "this is one of the most absorbing albums to be released in Scotland in a long time" - Scotland on Sunday (on "Don't Sing Lovesongs", June 2007) ..After several years juggling her music around fulltime work in Gaelic medium education, Mackinnon took the plunge to go fulltime with music in 2008. She is currently planning a second solo album as well as being involved in three exciting new projects; the new trio Mackinnon/MacColl/MacPherson (with Ewan MacPherson and Lauren MacColl), a Gaelic song project with renowned world music producer Jerry Boys, and guesting with new world music outfit "The Future Trad Collective" (Michael McGoldrick and Ian Fletcher). .. I like it! Just like everything Mike McGoldrick is involved in to be honest. Great "melange" (mixity). Great music.
Just asked for CD for my birthday! And looking forward to hearing them at the Met in May hopefully.
Thank you.
