Mafalda Chandler was born in Lisbon - Portugal, February 6th 1974. She grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she had her first contact with the rich Popular Music of Brazil. At 10 years old, back in Portugal Mafalda started performing to live audiences, singing mostly Brazilian music, accompanied by her father's guitar, and later by the famous Fado guitarist Fernando Alvim.
In 1992, she started taking private vocal lessons with one of the most prestigious Portuguese Classical teachers, Maria do Rosario Coelho. In 1993, Mafalda entered the Hot Clube de Portugal/ Luis Villas Boas Jazz School, studying music with some of the best Portuguese musicians, with whom she would soon start performing and making a living as a professional vocalist. She was also selected to perform with the "Big Villas Band" jazz orchestra, performing throughout all of Portugal.
During the summers of 1994 and 1995, she participated in jazz workshops lead by the British singer Norma Winstone, with the all-star accompaniment of some of the most brilliant European jazz musicians, such as Perico Sanbeat, Bernardo Sassetti, and Mario and Jordi Rossi.
In the Fall of 1998, Mafalda began attending the New School /Mannes College Of Music in New York City. She was honored to study with some of the greatest jazz performers of all time, such as Sheila Jordan, Junior Mance, and Kenny Werner among others. She also attended many music Master classes by John Hendricks, Kenny Baron, Lew Soloff, Victor Lewis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Carmen Lundi, John Abercronbie, and Rufus Reid.
In 2001 Mafalda performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators' annual conference, for Jovino Santos Neto's "Tudo e Som" book release, a collection of Brazilian genius composer Hermeto Pascoal's sheet music. Mafalda also worked with Grammy-winning producer Arthur Stead for a commercial jingle.
In May of 2001, Mafalda graduated with a Bachelor's degree in vocal jazz performance.
During the summer of 2003 Mafalda was invited to join the music entertainment team of Residensea's The World, the most luxurious cruise ship in the world. From 2003 to 2007, back in Lisbon, Portugal, she taught vocal technique, music theory and ensemble classes at the Barreiro jazz school, the Coimbra jazz school, and the Estoril music school.
In 2006, Mafalda started recording, composing and performing with her rock-and-roll band "Voices In Your Head", winning first prize at a battle-of-the-bands competition with another 137 bands from all over Portugal.
In 2007 Mafalda moved back to the US, to Woodstock, NY, performing mostly Brazilian music, and teaching pre-school children.
Recently settled in Denton, TX, Mafalda continues to perform with local musicians around the Dallas Metroplex.

Não falo inglês, sobrevivo com as palavras ao me comunicar. Mas quanto mais procuro por elas, as palavras certas, mais descubro o quanto o português é espetacular. O que é um idioma senão a expressão de um povo? Nós temos esse jeitinho que beira ao submisso de dar voltinhas para dizer o que queremos. Assim rodeando vamos pintando a aquarela das palavras com tanta sutileza, que os matizes vão ficando infinitos...muitas vezes corremos o risco de nos perder. Ao fazer nossos textos com tantos degradés fica difícil encontrar palavras em inglês. Na minha ignorância eu resumo da seguinte forma: é um povo mais duro, mais direto, mais ... Picasso? Seria Clarisse Lispector Clarisse sem o português? É muito difícil imaginar...bendita a terra do Brasil para ela...ela para nós! Nós somos assim: um jeito de estar em conjunto trocando detalhes. O inglês é muito curioso para mim, pois talvez seja a única lingua a usar um pronome-não todos- de forma maiúscula...sei lá, sou ignorante em línguas...Mas tenho teimado em usar i e não I...teimosia...reflexoda minha brasilidade...Não consigo me imaginar escrevendo um 'EU sou'. Soa tão pretensioso! Por isso digo: temos assim nossos defeitos, mas a virtude do jeitinho, que seja de suavidade irônica muitas vezes, trouxe seus benefícios! Amo a língua portuguesa! Amo a sensualidade dos detalhes! Amo a riqueza do conjunto. Sou Brasileira em muitas tonalidades!
