Who I'd like to meet: Serious and committed artists and producers interested in collaboration. Here's a little about me:
Magdalena Gomez, a Bronx native, is an award winning poet, playwright, performer and arts educator. Magdalena began her multidisciplinary arts career as a performance poet and cultural worker in 1971 and continues to perform and teach nationally. Encouraged in her youth by elder poets such as Sandra Maria Esteves, El Reverendo Pedro Pietri, Jose; Angel Figueroa, Emilie Glenn, Barbara A. Holland, Richard Spiegel and Louis Reyes Rivera, she now mentors young poets despite a demanding travel schedule.
Magdalena has been a featured performer and keynote in venues such as
Lincoln Center; St. John the Divine, NYC; Hunter College; Vanderbilt University; The Massachusetts State House; The Brooklyn Academy of Music; San Francisco State Poetry Center with Fred Ho; University of Illinois; NYU; University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Latina Letters Conference, BAAD! Ass Women's Festival, NYC; APSAC national conference, Hollywood; The Donnell Library, NYC; Smithsonian Institute; and countless schools K through University, cafes, bars, libraries, prisons, hospitals, monasteries, and conferences both nationally and internationally.
Magdalena's play, Lobster Face (or the shame of amanda cockshutt) premiered off-broadway in 2004 under the direction of Daniel Jaquez. This May she will release her new CD,Bemba y Chichon, a poetry and music collaboration with composer Aib-Gomez-Delgado. Other upcoming projects include: T/OUCH, a multi-media work, under the direction of Daniel Jaquez with original music by Aib Gomez Delgado; Fuego en la Cocina, Magdalena's first full-length Spanish language play, on three generations of women triumphantly overcoming domestic violence.
Magdalena was recently commissioned by Peggy Choy to write the script for Peggy's new dance theater work,Gateless Gate: Women of the Scarred Earth", premiering at the University of Wisconsin, March 2007.
