Magen Melancholy's music is unique. Big deal. With the massive amounts of information flooding our attention spans on a daily basis, originality in music is just not that hard to find, especially if you just look past the mainstream radio. Okay, so then what makes Magen Melancholy worth your attention? Why is Magen Melancholy special? Well, Magen Melancholy is a hip hop artist that not only transcends the boundaries and expectations of hip hop music, she does it in such a way that it feels as if within all its difference, there is still something familiar to latch on to, in other words, Magen Melancholy maintains the ability to experiment without the downfall of alienating the listener. How does she do this? "The Short-Lived Life of Magen Melancholy" is a collection of songs that brings you into the intimate setting of the human character. The character we meet is, of course, Magen Melancholy (in how she is conceived through song). What she is able to do in many of the songs is start from within, as in she will speak of her feelings. As the feelings move about and externalize themselves we are introduced to the larger and more comprehensive human condition. And do not worry, we are not forced to get lost in one character. Instead, the paradoxes, contradictions, and blunders that not only trouble us, but live with and within us, are all released. Through this, Melancholy figures out a way to not speak at nor to the listener, instead she speaks with the listener. The album itself is socially conscious, but not blandly political. It is emotional, but not aimlessly abstract. The music, done by Malark3y, is a mix of hip Hop, Jazz, Down-tempo, and electronica. It blends well with Melancholy's smooth flow and each balances each other as to never distract one another from the overall song. Although it is hip hop, she is able to capture many different styles of music that can attract many listeners who are not necessarily familiar with hip hop. At the same time she maintains a personality and tone that can satisfy an avid hip hop fans desire for raw hip hop music. Overall, in my opinion, this is one of the better albums to be released this year. It is a work that does not seem to take the listener for granted.
