Sounds Like
A rich blend of traditional and roots-based original songs with mediaeval and celtic flavours, presented with a contemporary twist.
Maggie Sand & Sandragon perform a unique blend of traditional and original songs and hi-energy dance tunes from the mediaeval and Renaissance eras, played on crumhorns, recorders, flute, hurdy-gurdy, harmonium, bouzouki, mandola, guitar and percussion.
Maggie and Mark Powell met whilst working on another music project. After discovering their shared love for traditional music, by 2007 they were performing around the folk club circuits in England, Switzerland and Germany, but underwent a transformation when they met Will Summers and became a trio. It was Will's crumhorns, recorders and flute that gave the band its trademark sound.
In late 2008, while recording "Susie Fair", Maggie's fourth album but the first for WildGoose Records, Sandragon was born, with the addition in 2008 of Will Hughes on percussion and in 2009 of Stephen Clark on wind isntruments.
Maggie Sand: voice, harmonium, bouzouki, cittole.
Maggie Sand studied classical piano from the age of five and grew up singing along with her mother, a professional opera singer, who introduced Maggie to a wide range of singers ranging from Maria Callas to Maddie Prior. Maggie then studied music in Canada, France and at Morley College in London. Now based in London, she has, during the past few years, released three solo albums for BSC Music in Germany with her other music project "Alquimia" ( the last two in collaboration with Mark Powell.) She has also collaborated with German musicians Joachim Roedelius, Peter Mergener, Rudiger Gleisberg, Anton Zinkl, Art of Infinity and Stella Maris on other albums for the BSC label.
Mark Powell: guitar, gittern, mandola, hurdy-gurdy, bouzouki, cittole.
As a musician, Mark has worked with some of the folk world's leading figures such as the Steve Ashley Band and Mick Ryan's touring folk theatre group, Fieldwork. He has also worked as studio engineer and/or producer with luminaries such as The Albion Band, Belshazzar's Feast, Blowzabella, Fairport Convention, Hoover the Dog, Bert Jansch, Danny Thompson and many others.
Will Summers: crumhorns, recorders, concert and wooden flutes, cornamuse, rauschpfeife, shawm.
Will is a regular wind instrument teacher at Moreley College in London. He also organises a series of Early Music Concerts in Kingston, London with his own company Lokki Music and also performs with medieval psychedellic band Circulus.
Stephen Clark: recorders, concert and wooden flutes, cornamuse, rauschpfeife, shawm, hummelchen, mediaeval great pipes, low whistle, euphonium.
Stephen is a multi-instrumentalist, collecting and playing mostly wind instruments. He studied at Leicester and Cardiff and over the years has worked with groups playing everything from early music to classical music.
Will Hughes: double bass, percussion, flute
Will started his music career as a drummer, then, after four years at the Academy of Contemporary Music, he went on to do a BA honours degree in contemporary music performance.
Paul Hutchinson: accordion.
Paul is a very well established performer in the folk scene for more than 20 years with bands such as Belshazzar's Feast, and Hoover the Dog.
