MAGHRIBIBEAT feature from Yorkshire Post - May 2008
A CALDER Valley, West Yorkshire, band is heading for fame with the release of its first CD - and air time on national BBC radio. Maghribibeat is a remarkable band which has brought the music of North Africa to Britain.
At the heart of the band is Mohammed Ibn Sina, a long-time Hebden Bridge resident who came to Britain from Morocco and whose family still lives there.
Mohammed - known to his friends as Mo - drew together a group of musicians, including his wife Jan, to launch the band and re-create the music of Mo's home country, and particularly that associated with his family.
The band re-creates a highly rhythmic and trance-like sound typical of North Africa. Band members have made several visits to Morocco to gather and extend their material, and during one visit performed on Moroccan national television.
The band has a growing following, and on Saturday 31st May, releases its' first CD with a gig at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. The CD, entitled 'Al Sharitte La'Awal', has already attracted national attention. One track, ‘Sabroh Wah Shatilla‘, was played on the Tom Robinson show on BBC Radio 6. Tom Robinson's comment was: "What a cracker!"
Maghribibeat are to headline at the second
World On Your Doorstep festival in Hebden Bridge on 19th & 20th July. The open-air festival was first held last year when despite a continuous downpour it attracted 2,000 music fans. The new CD will be formally released at the Trades Club gig on Saturday 31st May.
Mo said: "We've had some great gigs at venues across the north of England. The launch of our first CD though will be very special to us."
