After a 4-year stint in the musical wasteland of the Army as a paratrooper ending with a 7-month trip to the Persian Gulf for ..Desert Shield/Storm.., I (Chris Riser) headed to the decidedly musical-non-wasteland of Chapel Hill in fall 1991 to finish up an undergrad degree (and eventually a couple more...) at UNC. Surrounded by dozens of incredible bands and working as a DJ at ..WXYC.., I eventually founded the honky-tonk-punk-performance-art collective, ..Pine State... Recorded output during the band's 3-year lifetime was limited to a handful of compilation CD tracks and a split 7" with ..Trailer Bride.. (with whom I finagled a drumming gig once, as well....). A ..2-disc set.. of more Pine State material than anyone would ever want to hear was released in 2000 by Raleigh's ..Hollow Bunny.. label. During my time in Chapel Hill, I also spent time as steel guitarist for ..Whiskeytown.. and for Earl Wells and the Gushers, a post-Pine State (and non-ironic...) western swing band... .. After leaving Chapel Hill in 1997 for the mountains of western North Carolina, I picked up an upright bass and began playing with a few old-time string bands in the mountains. Former Pine State comrade ..Chris Lee.. dragged me back into the rock world again to play bass and guitar for some duo shows and for some full band shows with Chris's bandmates ..Jeremy Wilms.. and ..Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley... On one of those tours, with fellow ..Misra Records.. labelmates ..Will Johnson.. and ..Summer Hymns.., I started playing banjo, guitar and keys for Summer Hymns. Soon afterward, my family and I moved to ..">Lexington, Georgia.., just outside of Athens. I have been playing with Summer Hymns since 2003... ..Magovista is my solo project begun in 2006. Informed by a number of sources, including new and old folk, rock and jazz forms, Magovista continues to evolve toward a debut full-length recording, expected to be finished sometime this century. The recording is shaping up to be centered around the theme of ..quantum physics.. - or at least mind-bending space physics shit (I can't get enough of ..The Universe.. on The History Channel). I hope I can finish it soon without being too distracted by my imaginary death rap metal side-side project, Wigger Mortis. Word. -

El Aprendiz presenta este trabajo mudo, ingenuo, y entre un coro silencioso
(un coro completo de personas que son presenta físicamente y energéticamente
pero sónicamente nulo). Aprendo a ser como un aprendiz.
Der Lehrling überreicht diese Arbeit wortlos, naiv, und unter einem schweigsamen
Chor (ein gesammelter Chor von Leuten, der energisch und physisch ist, überreicht
aber schall nichtig). Ich lerne, als ein Lehrling zu sein.
The Apprentice presents this work wordless, naive, and among a silent choir
(a collected choir of people who are energetically and physically present but
sonically null.) I am learning to be as an apprentice.
