If you could bottle Nina Hagen, Tom Waits, Annie Lennox, Prince, Laurie Anderson, Cyndi Lauper and the Pointer Sisters, and Australia had an answer, it would have to be Maiden Speech. Almaryse Murphy and Pascalle Burton bring theatrical, innovative, mind-bending Poetry-Pop.
Maiden Speech are sister act Almaryse Murphy (she of the silky vox) and Pascalle Burton (Queensland Poetry Festival Slam winner 2006/Woodford Folk Festival Slam Deluxe winner 2006/07).
Joining forces on Pascalle's return from the UK, they have been freebasing ideas and creating their own breed of Poetry-Pop.
They are inspired by the ground-breakers of the 80's and aim to bust open the genres with new fusions of wordplay, funk and theatre.
The Maidens' self-titled debut album (produced by Ant Aggs and mixed by Magoo) has just been released and the track Don't Be Afraid of the 80's has already hit the Triple J airwaves. Request the track here!
To hear them is one thing - to experience Maiden Speech live takes it to another level. Are you a rebel? Have you ever danced with the devil? They have been likened to a female cross between Tenacious D and Salt-N-Pepa.
The 2007 Maiden Voyage Tour of the UK and Cyprus had The Maidens following a hectic schedule, including the Latitude Festival, headlining at The Fly, and playing venues Madame Jo Jo's, Club 333 and The Vibe Bar.
And since landing back in Oz, it doesn't seem to slow down! The coming months see performances at the Queensland Poetry Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival, Brisbane Cabaret Festival and Woodford Folk Festival.
