Mainspring was formed by Matthew and Pamela Murchison as a unique and flexible ensemble that presents concerts of world fusion music as well as exciting and entertaining original music. The ensemble fuses elements of folk, world, jazz, and classical music with an inventive instrumentation to create an exciting new sound.
The members of Mainspring have performed across the country and abroad, from California to New York, from Illinois to Italy, and everywhere in between. They have performed at regional and national conferences and have won awards from national and international competitions in both classical and jazz idioms. They have performed as soloists with orchestras, wind ensembles, community bands, and in recital throughout the country. The diverse membership have performed with pop/rock groups; great jazz artists such as Mike Stern, The New York Voices, and Michael Abene; with the top brass groups in the country such as the Brass Band of Battle Creek and the River City Brass Band; 60’s teen idols Fabian and Bobby Rydell; they have recorded for, and have been broadcast across the country on National Public Radio.
Mainspring is committed to music education and outreach through masterclasses and workshops for students of all ages. Masterclasses with one or more members of Mainspring can be customized to fit your needs.
A typical concert may consist of traditional jigs and reels from Scotland and Ireland, beautiful Mexican serenades, sambas, a suite of Spanish folk music, an Armenian lament, entertaining original music, and always plenty of light-hearted fun!
Hey, I'm a brass major at Slippery Rock University and I just wanted to say that I LOVED the concert last week. The Drunkin' Pirate song is my new favorite song! I also went to the RCBB concert last Thursday and that was amazing as well. Thanks for adding me.
Good to meet you! Glad to see another line-up that recognises the power of the euphonium in traditional music - Richard 'Doc' Rider in our line-up will be especially interested in listening to your music.
All best wishes from the 'Sods!
