NEWS AROUND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (((2009))) SEASON:..

---
*~January~*
---

Thursday, 1st -- Major League Baseball launches the MLB Network™. A show designed for baseball 24/7/365. "Our National Pastime Goes Full Time." With a surprise greeting from Commissioner Bud Selig that called it "the ultimate television destination for baseball," the MLB Network went on the air Thursday at 6 p.m. ET amid great anticipation and shattered the record for largest launch in cable network history with an estimated reach of 50 million households. It is a New Year, and it is a new home for Major League Baseball.

Mar 4, 2009 Los Angeles had sprinted to the 2008 wire with midseason acquisitions and a healed shortstop carrying the baton across the finish line. At the end of a halting offseason, they're all back for more. Ramirez returning to the Dodgers is about as surprising as the swallows returning to Capistrano. About four months after turning his back on the Dodgers' offer of two years at $45 million, he accepts essentially the same offer. Mar 24, 2009 One game, winner takes all for the second World Baseball Classic. A game at Dodger Stadium on Monday night that had more twists and turns than kabuki. The Japanese essentially had to win it twice. "That was as much intensity as you've seen in a baseball game in a long time," Commissioner Bud Selig said after the agonizingly four-hour spectacular ended with Japan besting rival Korea, 5-3, in 10 innings. "It was incredible. It was really amazing." And so the Japanese are the champions once again, successfully defending their 2006 title. Apr 5, 2009 Opening night 2009 Exorcising his Opening Day demons, Lowe showed why the Braves were willing to lure him to Atlanta in January with a four-year, $60 million contract. The veteran hurler surrendered two hits over eight scoreless innings, helping the Braves open the 2009 season with a 4-1 win over the defending World Series champion Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night. April 6 2009 opening day 2009 Apr 9, 2009 On one of the saddest mornings in Angels history, a groundskeeper on the field in Angel Stadium smoothed the pitching rubber on which Nick Adenhart stood 13 hours before. In a conference room on the third floor of the park, Adenhart's No. 34 uniform was draped over a table atop the dais. On its left sleeve, a "Preston" patch commemorating the recent passing of Angels exec Preston Gomez. There will soon be another patch on those uniforms, in memory of Adenhart, the victim of a tragic hit-and-run accident in Fullerton, Calif., in the wee minutes of Thursday. The sudden and shocking development moved the Angels to cancel Thursday's night game, the finale of a four-game series with Oakland Apr 17, 2009 Gary Sheffield's first career hit with the Mets came in dramatic fashion. Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Sheffield came in as a pinch-hitter and blasted the ninth pitch from Brewers reliever Mitch Stetter over the left-field fence to record his 500th career home run on Friday night. May 8, 2009 Despite three of their mainstays out of the lineup because of nagging injuries, Boston's offense belted the Indians around during an historic 12-run sixth inning that fueled a 13-3 victory on Thursday night at Fenway Park. Remarkably, the 12 runs were scored with nobody out, an American League record. It tied a modern Major League record, set by the Brooklyn Dodgers on May 24, 1953, in the eighth inning of a game against the Phillies. Major League Baseball suspended Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez for 50 games on Thursday for use of a performance-enhancing drug. Ramirez, in a statement released by the Major League Baseball Players Association, attributed the suspension to his use of a doctor-prescribed medication and waived his right to challenge the discipline. May 29, 2009 Matt Weiter's mlb debut For one night, the anticipation was over, yielding to a city's everyday appreciation for a highly touted prospect. Wieters went 0-for-4 in his big league debut, a 7-2 Orioles victory, but he was treated to several standing ovations, including one that started when he approached the batter's box and didn't end until after he flied out to right field. May 30, 2009 Ryan Howard grand slam traveled 475 feet Jun 4, 2009 Randy Johnson became the 24th pitcher in Major League history to win 300 games, limiting the Washington Nationals to an unearned run and two hits as the San Francisco Giants prevailed, 5-1, Jun 9, 2009 Taking the player at the top of every scouting chart, Washington selected San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg with the first overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Jun 14, 2009 Miguel Tejada collected his 2,000th career hit in the sixth inning Saturday night Jun 26, 2009 Alex Rodriguez added his 564th home run to pass Reggie Jackson on the career list

-------------

2008 MVP's

AL: Dustin Pedroia

The .326 batting average, 213 hits, 118 runs, 54 doubles, 17 home runs, 20 stolen bases do not tell the whole story of how valuable Dustin was to the team in 2008. He also played gritty Gold Glove defense, and served as the igniting spark plug in our clubhouse all year.

NL: Albert Pujols

He hit .357, two points shy of his career high, and set new personal bests with a .462 on-base percentage, a 1.115 OPS and 104 walks. He slugged .653, nearly 30 points better than his career average, cranking 37 homers and 44 doubles. Pujols drove in 116 runs, scored 100 and struck out just 54 times.

-------------

CY YOUNG

AL: Cliff Lee

Lee led the AL in wins with a 22-3 record and in ERA with a 2.54 mark, posted the third-highest winning percentage (.880) for a 20-game winner in baseball history and became the Tribe's first 20-game winner since Gaylord Perry in 1974.

NL: Tim Lincecum

He compiled a league-best .783 winning percentage with his 18-5 record and amassed 265 strikeouts to become the first Giant in baseball's modern era (since 1900) to earn that distinction. Against Lincecum, opponents hit .221 overall and .167 with runners in scoring position while averaging 7.22 hits per nine innings -- all league lows. And his 2.62 ERA was the NL's second best.

-------------

Rookie Of The Year

AL: Evan Longoria

Longoria made a name for himself when he hit .272 with 27 home runs and 85 RBIs in 122 games.

NL: Geovany Soto

Soto batted .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs in his freshman season and is the first catcher to win the league honor since Mike Piazza did so 15 years ago.

-------------

Manager Of The Year

AL: Joe Maddon

Maddon led the Rays to their first winning season with an AL East-best record of 97-65 to break the previous club record by 27 wins. In doing so, the Rays improved their record by 31 games over 2007 -- which made for the third-best improvement in AL history -- earning a spot in the World Series.

NL: Lou Pinella

Piniella and the Cubs posted a 97-64 record and won the National League Central for the second consecutive year. He's the first skipper to lead the team to back-to-back postseason appearances since Frank Chance did so in 1906-08.

-------------

Hank Aaron Award

AL: Kevin Youkilis

Youkilis set career highs with a .312 batting average to rank sixth in the AL, 168 hits, 43 doubles, and club-high totals of 29 home runs and 115 RBIs, good for fourth in the AL.

NL: Aramis Ramirez

Ramirez hit .289 with 97 runs scored, a career-high 44 doubles, 27 home runs, a club-high 111 RBIs, a career-best .380 on-base percentage and a .518 slugging percentage.

-------------

MLB Clutch Performer Of 2008

CC Sabathia

In 17 starts with Milwaukee, Sabathia went 11-2 with seven CGs, including one on the last day of the season to clinch the Wild Card.

-------------

Delivery Man Of 2008

Brad Lidge

Brad Lidge saved 41 games in 41 chances during the regular season and finished with a 2-0 record and 1.95 ERA in 69 1/3 innings.

-------------

Roberto Clemente Award

Albert Pujols

Rewarding his extensive charity work and outstanding play, the Cards' Albert Pujols was named the 2008 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy.

-------------

Comeback Player Of 2008

AL: Cliff lee
After a demotion to Buffalo in '07 and an absence from the Tribe's postseason roster, Lee has made it back to being a consistent winner in the big leagues.

NL: Brad Lidge

In a classic example of a player seizing a fresh start, Lidge converted 41-of-41 save chances in 2008, and returned to be one of Major League Baseball's elite closers

Prince Albert, meet Prince Fielder.

With a sellout red-clad Busch Stadium crowd chanting for the hometown royalty, Albert Pujols, to claim the State Farm Home Run Derby hardware in his own castle, it was the Cardinals slugger's National League Central counterpart who tore down the ramparts and grabbed the gold.

Fielder, the Milwaukee Brewers' All-Star first baseman, outhomered Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers in the final by a score of 6-5 to win his first Derby in his second try.

He also hit the longest long ball of the competition, a 503-foot moon shot to right-center field in the semifinal round, and the second-longest, a 497-foot blast during his 11-homer first round.

Cruz tied Fielder with 11 homers in the first round, hit five more in the semis and rounded it off with five in the final.

Pujols didn't make it past the second round but provided plenty of drama for his fans, rallying from near-elimination twice to keep the dream -- and the flashbulbs popping throughout the crowd of 45,981 -- alive.

The format of the contest, as always, is to see how many homers a player can hit before he makes 10 outs -- an out is anything other than a homer -- and in the opening round, Pujols had only one homer with seven outs and three long balls with nine outs.

Pujols came up big with no margin for error, however, blasting two more long balls to force a "bat-off" against Carlos Pena and Joe Mauer for the last spot in the semifinals as Busch went wild with chants of "Let

The energy was pulsating for Albert Pujols at Monday's State Farm Home Run Derby. It got him to the second round, but no further.

The Cardinals slugger had the home crowd behind him in more ways than one at Busch Stadium. Needing at least five homers to advance to the second round, he got a little assistance through a bit of fan interference and from a bat that heated up the more he swung it.

Unfortunately for Pujols and the masses who were eager to crown him Derby champ at an All-Star week that clearly belongs to him, the six homers he hit in the second round were not enough to get to the championship round. Nevertheless, it was a strong effort from the hometown hero.

"I wish I could have put on a better show for the fans," Pujols lamented afterward. "But I'm thankful for the opportunity to be around these great players."

Pujols' performance began with a Derby appetizer. He took part in a "called shot" promotion in which baseball fan Mark Weinberger from Philadelphia predicted Pujols would yank one out to left-center field. Alas, Pujols fell short on two swings, and Weinberger didn't win a prize package that included a new car and a 65-inch flat-screen TV.

Perhaps Pujols just wasn't warmed up.

When he stepped to the plate as the eighth and final participant in the first round, he homered with a 397-foot blast to left-center on his third hack, but was otherwise quiet through his first seven outs. Then he got hot. He ripped a 416-foot blast just left of center, and a 389-foot wall-scraper on which a fan reached over the wall and hauled the ball in to ensure a homer (no replay was going to overturn this one).

Joe Torre was a little worried his team might start the All-Star break a day early.

Instead, the Dodgers closed the season's first half in the same fashion that's led them to Major League Baseball's best record.

Orlando Hudson homered from both sides of the plate, and Clayton Kershaw picked up his fourth consecutive win as the Dodgers beat Milwaukee, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park to close out the season's first half.

"It was a great game for [Kershaw] and, of course, for us," Torre said. "The one thing you concern yourself with is when you're heading toward the All-Star break, [sometimes the players] take it before it gets here. This ballclub didn't do that."

With the win, the Dodgers enter the All-Star break with the best record in baseball at 56-32, two games ahead of the Boston Red Sox.

Aside from keeping that distinction -- which they've had since May 4 -- Torre said Sunday's win was big for another reason. The win gave the Dodgers a 6-3 record on their nine-game road trip to San Diego, New York and Milwaukee heading into the All-Star break.

"We did some good things on this road trip," Torre said. "The most important thing probably was the ability to bounce back after [we] lose a game."

Kershaw struggled in the first inning against the Brewers (45-43), beginning with a one-out double to Corey Hart. The left-hander got Ryan Braun to ground out, but loaded the bases with two straight walks before buckling down to strike out Mike Cameron.

Kershaw (7-5) allowed one run on two hits in six-plus innings, leaving in the seventh after giving up a leadoff double to Cameron, who eventually scored.

Post positions have been drawn and the horses are just about ready to break from the gate in baseball's favorite Derby.

The 2009 State Farm Home Run Derby field was finalized on Sunday, when American League home run leader Carlos Pena was named to replace the Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia on the AL roster for Tuesday's All-Star Game and as the fourth AL entrant in the Derby.

The Derby, part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day, will be broadcast live on ESPN and MLB.com beginning at 8 p.m. ET tonight.

MLB.com's coverage will include a live feed of the Derby, a Twitter feed and real-time results.

Pena joins Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge, Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz and Twins catcher Joe Mauer from the Junior Circuit, and the National League features big league homer leader, hometown hero and All-Star centerpiece Albert Pujols of the Cardinals, plus Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres, Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard of the Phillies.

"I thought that it would be only fitting for me to experience the whole entire thing," Pena said of being named to the All-Star team and the Derby on the same day.

"This is a huge deal to me. I'm not going to even pretend to play it cool or professional. I'm in shock. I've called half the world."

Pujols is naturally the choice as the heavy favorite in this competition.

Not only will Pujols be swinging for fences that he knows -- and clears -- better than anyone in the game, but he's also on the way to the biggest power year in his otherworldly career. Pujols had 32 homers entering Sunday's games -- eight more than Gonzalez, the NL runner-up, or Pena, the AL leader.

Pujols will also participate in the "Call Your Shot" promotion, in which a fan points to a spot in the stands and Pujols attempts to hit a batting-practice home run to that area. If he is su

Melvin Mora doesn't just have a flair for the dramatic. He also has a sense of staging. Moments after hitting a walk-off home run -- the second of his career and his first long ball since the first week of May -- Mora wasn't content to revel in the accomplishment. Instead, he ran through his news conference in his mind.

"When I was running and I crossed first base," he said on Saturday after Baltimore's 4-3 win over Toronto, "I just think, 'Oh my god, all the questions I have to answer today after the game. You haven't hit one home run since [May].' But it's a good feeling, especially when you win the game. ... Our bullpen was able to shut it down."

And then, like so many conclusions in so many soap operas, Mora answered the bell. First, the veteran was on the business end of a tough defensive play that scuttled Toronto's best chance of pulling ahead. Then, with the game winding into the 12th inning, Mora mercifully ended it with a towering home run to right field.

That long ball, as routine as it seemed, broke the longest homerless drought of his career. Mora hadn't homered since May 7, and he endured a power outage for 50 games and 190 at-bats. And if that seems like it's noteworthy enough, you may also consider that Mora hadn't hit a walk-off shot since April of the 2000 season.

"Melvin picked a good time to get one," said manager Dave Trembley, who sat out the evening while serving the second half of a two-game suspension. "I've heard him say he's not a home run hitter, but it's certainly nice for him to get one tonight and win the game. Everybody dreams of that, a walk-off [to] win the gam

The future of the Nationals' starting rotation continues to look promising. Right-hander Craig Stammen had a lot of run support on Saturday night, and he took advantage of it as the Nationals defeated the Astros, 13-2, at Minute Maid Park.

The victory snapped Washington's five-game losing streak and improved its record to 26-60.

Stammen (2-4) tossed the first complete game of his career, yielding just two runs on nine hits. It was the fourth complete game tossed by a Nationals pitcher this season. Stammen even drove in a run with a double and also scored a run.

"It's good that we got a win," Stammen said. "We had a couple of games that slipped away. The offense made it easy for me to throw strikes, try to get some quick outs and allow me to go deep into the game."

Manager Manny Acta is often cautious when dealing with young pitchers, usually limiting them to no more than seven innings. But Saturday was a different story.

The original plan was to allow reliever Tyler Clippard to pitch the eighth inning. But Stammen had thrown just 87 pitches, and after an eight-pitch bottom of the eighth, Acta decided to let Stammen, who's next start is scheduled for next Sunday, go the distance.

"He did a tremendous job and was able to throw his curveball more than he did in the past," Acta said. "It was a good curveball today, and he kept them off-balance all day. We made good plays behind him. When you sink the ball, throw the ball over the plate and people play good defense behind you, [good things] happen."

Stammen felt he had to give the Astros a different look. In the

Through five innings on Saturday night, John Smoltz's first win in a Red Sox uniform seemed like a foregone conclusion. By game's end, it was more of an afterthought.

Boston took a seemingly commanding 9-1 lead into the sixth, but the lopsided advantage morphed into a 15-9 slugfest victory over Kansas City at Fenway Park.

The offensive explosion, which included two home runs from Kevin Youkilis, backed the strongest outing of the season for Smoltz, who allowed one run on four hits over five frames to claim his first win since April 17, 2008 -- a span of 450 days.

"I've checked in, that's what I feel like," said Smoltz, who improved to 1-2 in four starts. "All kinds of thoughts come through my head. I haven't had a chance to smile after an outing yet, but today will make the All-Star break a lot more fun."

Smoltz's performance, which included a season-high seven strikeouts, almost went for naught, as the suddenly shaky Red Sox bullpen surrendered eight runs.

"It was back and forth," Youkilis said. "They were coming closer and closer. Fortunately, we got some distance in the end."

David Ortiz and Jason Varitek also homered for the Sox (53-34), who took a two-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East with New York's 14-8 loss to the Angels.

Ortiz's fourth-inning roundtripper marked the 1,000th hit of his career with Boston. He is the 30th player in club history to reach that plateau.

An early 9-0 deficit did nothing to discourage the Royals (37-50

Vice President Joe Biden had a premonition at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday.

He had told his wife, Jill, that Ryan Howard was going to hit a home run in the ninth inning.

Howard did just that, a 420-foot, three-run, game-tying shot to left-center field. Raul Ibanez then doubled, and two batters later, Paul Bako singled him home to cap off an improbable comeback. The Phillies scored five in the ninth off Pirates closer Matt Capps to beat the Bucs, 8-7, in front of 45,209 fans and one vice president.

"It was incredible," said Biden, donning a Phillies cap and posing for a photo with Howard outside the home clubhouse. "I loved it. You know, the thing about the Phillies is, you never gave up."

The pitch to Howard was a fastball low and inside, and the Phils slugger said he was sitting on a fastball.

So was Matt Stairs, who began the inning by doing what he does best: hitting a pinch-hit home run, his fourth of the season. Trailing by four, Stairs turned around Capps' 3-1 offering and sent it well beyond the right-field wall, a carryover of what the veteran described as a strong batting practice.

"The fans came alive there," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I think Stairs' homer kind of woke 'em up a little bit -- and woke the dugout up, too."

Jimmy Rollins, who had matched a career high with three stolen bases, walked. The crowd got louder.

Shane Victorino hit a fly ball deep to the right-center-field warning track. The ball barely stayed in the

Ryan Howard, the left-handed-hitting powerhouse from the Philadelphia Phillies, had to come from behind in each of the three rounds to top David Wright of the New York Mets on Monday night at PNC Park to win the CENTURY 21 Home Run Derby.

In a battle of second-year players, Ryan hit five homers in the finals after Wright led off with four, giving the Phillies the derby winner for the second consecutive year. Bobby Abreu set the single-round record when he opened with 24 homers on the way to a derby-winning 41 a year ago at Detroit's Comerica Park.

"[Abreu] just told me basically to pretend like nobody else was out there," Ryan said about a conversation in the days before the derby. "[He said] that it was just [the pitcher] and myself, and just to get locked in that way, just to take pitches and try not to tire yourself out too early."

The right-handed-hitting Wright rapped out 16 homers in this year's first round and slipped into the finals against Howard when he hit two more in the second round. Both players, who had a two-round total of 18, were competing in the Derby for the first time. Howard had the edge in the end, 23-22.

"I was unconscious in the beginning," Wright said. "Then we had the break, and I cooled off. I was brought back down to earth. I wish I would've had all my 30 outs in that first round [instead of 10 outs per round]. I might still be hitti

Bobby Abreu had a night for the ages Monday in the CENTURY 21 Home Run Derby, pounding 41 long balls into the far reaches of Comerica Park and shattering the records for a single round, the championship round and the total for all three rounds of the derby.

He defeated hometown hero Pudge Rodriguez, the Puerto Rican catcher from the Detroit Tigers, 11-5, in the final round. I-Rod had 20 on the night.

Abreu, the Venezuelan from the Philadelphia Phillies who hit 18 homers during the first half of the season and is the starting right fielder for the National League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game, hit 24 homers in the first round, breaking the single-round record of 15 set by Miguel Tejada when he won the derby in Houston last year.

"It was unbelievable," Tejada said about the show put on by Abreu. "That's what happened to me last year. Today, everything is about Abreu. He was No. 1."

Tejada, the Baltimore Orioles shortstop from the Dominican, hit a derby-record total of 27 last July at Minute Maid Park and had that record broken early when Abreu added six more in the second round for a two-round total of 30. The championship-round record of nine was held by Garrett Anderson when the Angels slugger won the derby at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field in 2003. Abreu bested that mark by two.

Mike Napoli hit a go-ahead two-run double off Andy Pettitte during a seven-run fifth inning and added a solo homer in the seventh, leading the Los Angeles Angels to their second straight comeback victory over the New York Yankees, 14-8 on Saturday.

Alex Rodriguez homered twice for the Yankees, increasing his career total to 570 and putting him in 10th place on the all-time list ahead of former Texas Rangers teammate Rafael Palmeiro -- another slugger whose reputation was tarnished by the steroids scandal. It was A-Rod's 53rd multihomer game and first this season.

Brandon Wood connected for a two-run homer during the Angels' fifth-inning rally, Howie Kendrick capped it with a two-run single and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs against his former team. The two-time defending AL West champions lead the majors with 26 comeback wins, one more than the Yankees.

For the seventh time in the Angels' last eight games, they fell behind by at least four runs. And for the fourth time, they won -- including Friday night's 10-6 victory, when they overcame a 5-1 deficit against Joba Chamberlain. It was the first time they have won four games in this fashion on one homestand in the franchise's 49-year history.

This wasn't exactly what Houston fans had in mind when they envisioned Roger Clemens starting the 75th All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park.

The crowd had barely calmed itself from the buzz created by the appearance of ceremonial first-pitch honoree Muhammad Ali when Clemens put the National League in a quick six-run hole, which led to a 9-4 American League win.

An Ivan Rodriguez RBI triple and two-run homer by Manny Ramirez gave the AL an immediate 3-0 lead. With two outs, Jason Giambi reached on a Jeff Kent error, and after Derek Jeter singled to left, game MVP Alfonso Soriano cleared the bases with a first-pitch homer to left field that gave the AL a six-run advantage.

Soriano finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.

"I felt a little sorry because he's been nice to me all of the time," Soriano said of Clemens, a teammate when both were with the Yankees last season. "But you know, I had to do my job in the game. I am sorry, but you know, I am happy right now."

Jonathan Sanchez approached his outing Friday night realistically. After all, he had emerged from a demotion to the bullpen to make his first start since June 22.

He lasted just long enough to make history.

Merging improbable circumstances with impressive pitching, Sanchez recorded the first no-hitter of the 2009 season in the Giants' 8-0 victory Friday night over the Padres.

Only a one-out fielding error in the eighth inning by third baseman Juan Uribe separated Sanchez from a perfect game. "It's [part of] the game," Sanchez said. "It can happen."

Coincidentally, left-hander Randy Johnson, who threw the last perfect game in the Major Leagues on May 18, 2004, was on hand in the Giants' dugout. And it was Johnson's strained throwing shoulder, which forced him onto the disabled list, that prompted the Giants to return Sanchez to the starting rotation.

"He was locked in today," Johnson said of Sanchez. "It was a lot of fun to watch."

For Sanchez's backers -- including his father, Sigfredo, who was visiting from Lajas, Puerto Rico -- it became nerve-racking with one out in the ninth inning as center fielder Aaron Rowand saved Sanchez's gem with a leaping catch at the wall of Edgar Gonzalez's drive. It was Rowand's first game since Wednesday, when he ran into the left-center-field barrier after making a spectacular running catch to rob Florida's Wes Helms.

With Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero idled by injuries, the Angels still managed to combine long ball with a dash of small ball and out-bomb the Bronx Bombers on Friday night in front of 44,076 at Angel Stadium.

Rallying for their 25th comeback win of the season -- matching the Yankees for the Major League lead -- the Angels got three-run homers from Kendry Morales and Erick Aybar, along with a go-ahead triple by Chone Figgins, to subdue the Yankees, 10-6, in a wild one.

"They've got a lot of good players, not just those two guys," Yankees catcher Jose Molina, formerly of the Angels, said, referring to Hunter and Guerrero. "That's why they're fighting for first place. They've got guys who can hit and do a lot of things. You saw that tonight."

Aybar's blast came in the seventh inning against Brian Bruney after shortstop Derek Jeter -- who had been 4-for-4 as a designated hitter -- dropped a popup for an error, making all three runs unearned.

Jeff Mathis walked, then Aybar reached the seats in the right-field corner after narrowly missing in the same area earlier in the at-bat.

Asked which bothered him more, the walk to Mathis or the blast by Aybar, Bruney deferred.

"I don't know," Bruney said. "They're both pretty equally bad. Not getting guys out, that'd be the difference [in the game]."

- Casey Blake hit an RBI triple in the top of the 10th inning to score Manny Ramirez, and Matt Kemp connected for a grand slam later in the inning as the Dodgers came back to beat the Brewers, 12-8, on Friday night at Miller Park.

Ramirez drew a two-out walk off Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva before Blake drilled a liner to the base of the right-center-field wall to give Los Angeles a one-run lead, but Kemp provided a breath of fresh air in a game the Dodgers had already fought back in twice.

With the bases loaded and one out, Kemp smashed his fourth career grand slam -- and third of the year -- to knock Villanueva (2-6) out of the game and give the Dodgers plenty of cushion.

Ramon Troncoso (3-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Known for their come-from-behind wins all season, the Dodgers had already come back twice in the game. Down a run entering the sixth inning, Los Angeles regained the lead quickly thanks to a two-run homer by Ramirez and a solo shot by Russell Martin..

With no one out in the top of the sixth inning on Friday night, Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer against the Brewers to tie Yankees legend Mickey Mantle for 15th on the all-time home run list.

It is the 536th home run of Ramirez's 17-year career.

Lance Berkman anointed teammate Michael Bourn as the Astros' Most Valuable Player for the first half of the season prior to Friday's game, and the speedy center fielder helped justify his case with his performance against Washington.

Bourn had two hits, including his third home run of the season, stole a base and threw out two runners at the plate to lead the Astros to a dramatic 6-5 win over the Nationals and into sole possession of third place in the National League Central.

Geoff Blum's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth scored Miguel Tejada from third base with the game-winning run, setting off a celebration at Minute Maid Park.

Washington rallied for four runs in the seventh inning by scoring two runs off starter Roy Oswalt and two more off reliever Chris Sampson to take a 5-4 lead. Oswalt was forced to leave the game in the seventh after experiencing numbness on two fingers of his pitching hand.

The Astros tied the game in the eighth on Jeff Keppinger's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left field. Bourn threw out Willie Harris at the plate in the ninth on a nice catch and tag by Ivan Rodriguez to preserve the tie.

Carlos Lee and Bourn hit leadoff homers in the second and third innings, respectively, to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. Oswalt retired the first nine batters he faced before Nyjer Morgan singled to lead off the fourth. He stole second and third, then scored on a double by Nick Johnson to cut the Houston lead to 2-1.

The Astros took a 4-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Bourn, who scored Blum from third and Kazuo

When Derrek Lee's game-tying three-run homer off Chris Carpenter sailed over the right-field fence in the third inning Friday, Ryan Ludwick had one simple thought.

"We need more runs," Ludwick said. "That's all."

The Cardinals got plenty, thanks in large part to Ludwick and Albert Pujols, who led the team to an 8-3 win over the Cubs in the opener of a four-game series. Ludwick and Pujols combined to go 5-for-6 with six RBIs, leading a 10-hit, nine-walk performance against the Chicago pitching staff.

With the score knotted at 3, Pujols led off the fifth against Rich Harden (5-6) and lifted what initially looked like a playable fly ball to center. But the ball caught the wind that was blowing out and landed in the basket just over the 400-foot sign.

"Our lineup is good from the leadoff guy on," Pujols said. "We know what kind of talent we have. Obviously we haven't clicked where we want to be like we were in April, but it's a long season."

The Cardinals proceeded to blow the game open with a four-run sixth against reliever Aaron Heilman, during which they recorded only two hits. With Brendan Ryan on first and one out, Colby Rasmus and Pujols drew consecutive walks. Ludwick then picked up his third single of the game to drive in two, and St. Louis tacked on two more on Yadier Molina's fielder's choice pop fly and Heilman's wild pitch.

Ludwick finished 3-for-3 with a walk. He has a hit in nine of his last 10 games, recording 13 RBIs in that span, and fee

The Mets traded right fielder Ryan Church to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur prior to Friday's contest with the Reds.

Francoeur hit .250 with five home runs and 35 RBIs in 82 games for the Braves this season. Church, meanwhile, batted .280 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 67 games for the Mets.

"This is a trade that's not only for now, but for next year and beyond, because of the youth of the player and that what he does fits the ballpark," general manager Omar Minaya said.

Francoeur, 25, is known across the league for his defense in right field. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2007 and has more assists than any other big league outfielder since he made his Major League debut in July 2005.

"This ballpark plays better for Francoeur because, even though Ryan Church is a good defensive player, Francoeur covers a lot of ground," Minaya said. "Base hits to right field -- you just don't run [on Francoeur]."

Francoeur looked like a star when he burst onto the scene in 2005, hitting .300 with 14 home runs in 70 games for the Braves. He drove in more than 100 runs in each of his first two full seasons while playing all 162 games.

Francoeur tailed off in 2008, batting just .239 with 11 home runs and 71 RBIs.

"Omar has always talked to me and told me how much he likes my energy and the way that I play," Francoeur said. "I'm looking forward to getting up there and playing in front of a packed house every night."

The biggest concern regarding Francoeur is his plate discipline, or lack thereof. Francoeur has walked a total of 127 times in 2,632 career plate appearances, or roughly once every 20 times up.

"Plate discipline has been an issue with Jeff," Minaya s

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel must make an important decision before the end of the weekend.

He must replace Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran on the National League All-Star team. Shane Victorino could have taken the injured Beltran's spot, but he won the Final Vote competition Thursday to put him on the roster.

Manuel can go a lot of ways.

How about Jayson Werth?

Werth went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a walk in Thursday night's 9-6 victory over the Reds at Citizens Bank Park. Werth is hitting .268 with 20 homers, 54 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Those are impressive numbers, but are they enough to put him in the All-Star Game as Beltran's replacement? Manuel wouldn't say, although he will work with Major League Baseball to name an alternate.

"His stats definitely go up there with those other guys," Manuel said.

Those other guys could be Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval (.328, 13 homers, 48 RBIs), Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp (.319, 10, 46, 19 stolen bases) and D-backs third baseman Mark Reynolds (.262, 24, 62, 15 stolen bases).

In the end, it might be tough for Manuel to convince the league to take three Phillies outfielders to the All-Star Game on Tuesday in St. Louis. Phils left fielder Raul Ibanez has been elected as a starter, and he could rejoin the team Friday night against the Pirates. If Ibanez plays at least two games this weekend, he is expected to play in the Midsummer Classic.

But Werth at least has proved himself more than capable of handling the everyday job in right field.

Much was made about that before the season started.

"Am I happy with the first half I&#39
