NEWS AROUND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (((2009))) SEASON:..

---
*~January~*
---

Thursday, 1st -- Major League Baseball launches the MLB Network™. A show designed for baseball 24/7/365. "Our National Pastime Goes Full Time." With a surprise greeting from Commissioner Bud Selig that called it "the ultimate television destination for baseball," the MLB Network went on the air Thursday at 6 p.m. ET amid great anticipation and shattered the record for largest launch in cable network history with an estimated reach of 50 million households. It is a New Year, and it is a new home for Major League Baseball.

Mar 4, 2009 Los Angeles had sprinted to the 2008 wire with midseason acquisitions and a healed shortstop carrying the baton across the finish line. At the end of a halting offseason, they're all back for more. Ramirez returning to the Dodgers is about as surprising as the swallows returning to Capistrano. About four months after turning his back on the Dodgers' offer of two years at $45 million, he accepts essentially the same offer. Mar 24, 2009 One game, winner takes all for the second World Baseball Classic. A game at Dodger Stadium on Monday night that had more twists and turns than kabuki. The Japanese essentially had to win it twice. "That was as much intensity as you've seen in a baseball game in a long time," Commissioner Bud Selig said after the agonizingly four-hour spectacular ended with Japan besting rival Korea, 5-3, in 10 innings. "It was incredible. It was really amazing." And so the Japanese are the champions once again, successfully defending their 2006 title. Apr 5, 2009 Opening night 2009 Exorcising his Opening Day demons, Lowe showed why the Braves were willing to lure him to Atlanta in January with a four-year, $60 million contract. The veteran hurler surrendered two hits over eight scoreless innings, helping the Braves open the 2009 season with a 4-1 win over the defending World Series champion Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night. April 6 2009 opening day 2009 Apr 9, 2009 On one of the saddest mornings in Angels history, a groundskeeper on the field in Angel Stadium smoothed the pitching rubber on which Nick Adenhart stood 13 hours before. In a conference room on the third floor of the park, Adenhart's No. 34 uniform was draped over a table atop the dais. On its left sleeve, a "Preston" patch commemorating the recent passing of Angels exec Preston Gomez. There will soon be another patch on those uniforms, in memory of Adenhart, the victim of a tragic hit-and-run accident in Fullerton, Calif., in the wee minutes of Thursday. The sudden and shocking development moved the Angels to cancel Thursday's night game, the finale of a four-game series with Oakland Apr 17, 2009 Gary Sheffield's first career hit with the Mets came in dramatic fashion. Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Sheffield came in as a pinch-hitter and blasted the ninth pitch from Brewers reliever Mitch Stetter over the left-field fence to record his 500th career home run on Friday night. May 8, 2009 Despite three of their mainstays out of the lineup because of nagging injuries, Boston's offense belted the Indians around during an historic 12-run sixth inning that fueled a 13-3 victory on Thursday night at Fenway Park. Remarkably, the 12 runs were scored with nobody out, an American League record. It tied a modern Major League record, set by the Brooklyn Dodgers on May 24, 1953, in the eighth inning of a game against the Phillies. Major League Baseball suspended Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez for 50 games on Thursday for use of a performance-enhancing drug. Ramirez, in a statement released by the Major League Baseball Players Association, attributed the suspension to his use of a doctor-prescribed medication and waived his right to challenge the discipline. May 29, 2009 Matt Weiter's mlb debut For one night, the anticipation was over, yielding to a city's everyday appreciation for a highly touted prospect. Wieters went 0-for-4 in his big league debut, a 7-2 Orioles victory, but he was treated to several standing ovations, including one that started when he approached the batter's box and didn't end until after he flied out to right field. May 30, 2009 Ryan Howard grand slam traveled 475 feet Jun 4, 2009 Randy Johnson became the 24th pitcher in Major League history to win 300 games, limiting the Washington Nationals to an unearned run and two hits as the San Francisco Giants prevailed, 5-1, Jun 9, 2009 Taking the player at the top of every scouting chart, Washington selected San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg with the first overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Jun 14, 2009 Miguel Tejada collected his 2,000th career hit in the sixth inning Saturday night Jun 26, 2009 Alex Rodriguez added his 564th home run to pass Reggie Jackson on the career list July 2009 July 10, 2009 Jonathan Sanchez approached his outing Friday night realistically. After all, he had emerged from a demotion to the bullpen to make his first start since June 22. july 14,2009 It was an All-Star Game full of fresh faces until the very end. And that meant a very familiar result on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The American League extended its unbeaten streak in the Midsummer Classic to 13 years with a 4-3 win over the National League in front of 46,860. First-time All-Stars Adam Jones and Curtis Granderson teamed up to deliver the winning run for the Junior Circuit, which will have home-field advantage in this year's World Series, but All-Star veterans Jonathan Papelbon, Joe Nathan and Mariano Rivera brought the game home in relief July 22,2009 Manny Ramirez delivered a stunning pinch-hit grand slam into the Mannywood section of Dodger Stadium on his Bobblehead Night on Wednesday, powering the Dodgers to a 6-2 win over the Reds and a sweep of the series. July 23,2009 Mark Buehrle coolly closed out the 17th perfect game all-time in the regular season, a 5-0 victory Thursday. July 25,2009 The Cardinals finally got their impact bat. Addressing a glaring need as well as answering their manager's longstanding clarion call, the Redbirds acquired Matt Holliday from the A's in exchange for Brett Wallace and two other Minor Leaguers, Triple-A right-hander Clayton Mortensen and Double-A outfielder Shane Peterson. Holliday is the second significant acquisition by St. Louis this season, joining Mark DeRosa, and is the club's biggest in-season pickup since a 2004 trade for Larry Walker. July 30,2009 The Phillies got their Cy Young winner. After making a run at landing Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay before Friday's Trade Deadline, the Phillies instead acquired Indians ace Cliff Lee. The Phillies and Indians announced Wednesday evening that Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco have been traded to the Phillies for prospects Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson. July 31,2009

The Boston Red Sox got the big bat they were looking for, acquiring All-Star slugger Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians on Friday. Munson Eric Karabell looks at the fantasy implications of the two Red Sox deals, saying Victor Martinez will get lots of playing time in Boston, while Adam LaRoche starts again in Atlanta. Blog Martinez leaves Cleveland a day before the Indians were to hold Victor Martinez Bobblehead Night at Progressive Field in their game against Detroit. august 1,2009 Andrew McCutchen's first-inning long ball over the left-field corner wall was only a glimpse of what was to come. McCutchen hit three home runs -- the last one garnering a curtain call -- as the Pirates beat the Nats, 11-6, on Saturday night in front of 26,855 at PNC Park. Pittsburgh has now won four in a row against Washington in Pittsburgh. aug 31 The Dodgers completed a last-minute roster makeover before Monday night's deadline, acquiring Chicago White Sox slugger Jim Thome and Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jon Garland. Both players will be eligible for postseason play. Veteran right-hander Brad Penny has found his new destination, and that landing spot is San Francisco. sept11 The chase is now complete. With another hit on Friday, Derek Jeter recorded the 2,722nd of his career, shouldering past Lou Gehrig for the most in franchise history. sept 13 Ichiro Suzuki stands alone on another Major League pedestal, getting there on Sunday night with one of his specialties -- an infield single. Ichiro becomes the first player in Major League history to have nine consecutive 200-hit seasons, sept26 Cardinals secured their fourth National League Central championship in six years with a 6-3 win over the Rockies at Coors Field on Saturday night. sept 27 New York Yankees wrapped up the AL East title and home-field advantage throughout the postseason with a neat bow, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-2 Sunday for their 100th win of the season

-------------

2008 MVP's

AL: Dustin Pedroia

The .326 batting average, 213 hits, 118 runs, 54 doubles, 17 home runs, 20 stolen bases do not tell the whole story of how valuable Dustin was to the team in 2008. He also played gritty Gold Glove defense, and served as the igniting spark plug in our clubhouse all year.

NL: Albert Pujols

He hit .357, two points shy of his career high, and set new personal bests with a .462 on-base percentage, a 1.115 OPS and 104 walks. He slugged .653, nearly 30 points better than his career average, cranking 37 homers and 44 doubles. Pujols drove in 116 runs, scored 100 and struck out just 54 times.

-------------

CY YOUNG

AL: Cliff Lee

Lee led the AL in wins with a 22-3 record and in ERA with a 2.54 mark, posted the third-highest winning percentage (.880) for a 20-game winner in baseball history and became the Tribe's first 20-game winner since Gaylord Perry in 1974.

NL: Tim Lincecum

He compiled a league-best .783 winning percentage with his 18-5 record and amassed 265 strikeouts to become the first Giant in baseball's modern era (since 1900) to earn that distinction. Against Lincecum, opponents hit .221 overall and .167 with runners in scoring position while averaging 7.22 hits per nine innings -- all league lows. And his 2.62 ERA was the NL's second best.

-------------

Rookie Of The Year

AL: Evan Longoria

Longoria made a name for himself when he hit .272 with 27 home runs and 85 RBIs in 122 games.

NL: Geovany Soto

Soto batted .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs in his freshman season and is the first catcher to win the league honor since Mike Piazza did so 15 years ago.

-------------

Manager Of The Year

AL: Joe Maddon

Maddon led the Rays to their first winning season with an AL East-best record of 97-65 to break the previous club record by 27 wins. In doing so, the Rays improved their record by 31 games over 2007 -- which made for the third-best improvement in AL history -- earning a spot in the World Series.

NL: Lou Pinella

Piniella and the Cubs posted a 97-64 record and won the National League Central for the second consecutive year. He's the first skipper to lead the team to back-to-back postseason appearances since Frank Chance did so in 1906-08.

-------------

Hank Aaron Award

AL: Kevin Youkilis

Youkilis set career highs with a .312 batting average to rank sixth in the AL, 168 hits, 43 doubles, and club-high totals of 29 home runs and 115 RBIs, good for fourth in the AL.

NL: Aramis Ramirez

Ramirez hit .289 with 97 runs scored, a career-high 44 doubles, 27 home runs, a club-high 111 RBIs, a career-best .380 on-base percentage and a .518 slugging percentage.

-------------

MLB Clutch Performer Of 2008

CC Sabathia

In 17 starts with Milwaukee, Sabathia went 11-2 with seven CGs, including one on the last day of the season to clinch the Wild Card.

-------------

Delivery Man Of 2008

Brad Lidge

Brad Lidge saved 41 games in 41 chances during the regular season and finished with a 2-0 record and 1.95 ERA in 69 1/3 innings.

-------------

Roberto Clemente Award

Albert Pujols

Rewarding his extensive charity work and outstanding play, the Cards' Albert Pujols was named the 2008 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy.

-------------

Comeback Player Of 2008

AL: Cliff lee
After a demotion to Buffalo in '07 and an absence from the Tribe's postseason roster, Lee has made it back to being a consistent winner in the big leagues.

NL: Brad Lidge

In a classic example of a player seizing a fresh start, Lidge converted 41-of-41 save chances in 2008, and returned to be one of Major League Baseball's elite closers

-Roy Halladay could be putting on a Phillies uniform Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies and Halladay have agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $60 million or more, which would keep him in red pinstripes through the 2013 season, sources said. Halladay is taking his physical Tuesday and could be announced at a news conference Wednesday.

The Blue Jays would send Halladay and $6 million to the Phillies for prospects Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor and Travis d'Arnaud. The Phillies also would send Cliff Lee to the Mariners for prospects Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies and J.C. Ramirez.

ESPN.com reported that the Blue Jays will send Taylor to Oakland for Brett Wallace.

The Phillies got one of the best pitchers in baseball in Halladay. They also restocked their farm system by dealing Lee.

But that was not the only reason the Phillies traded Lee, whom they acquired in July for four prospects. They also needed salary relief, as their payroll approached $140 million. Lee will make $9 million next season. Add that to the $6 million that Toronto is sending to Philadelphia for Halladay, who makes $15.75 million, and the Phillies' payroll jumps only $750,000.

The Boston Red Sox have reached a tentative deal with right-handed pitcher John Lackey, pending a physical, worth slightly more than the $82.5 million, five-year contract A.J. Burnett signed with the New York Yankees last year, a source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

Lackey traveled to Boston for a physical exam Monday, fueling speculation that an agreement was close at hand.

Specific details weren't available, but the Red Sox's heightened pursuit of Lackey came after reports that Boston is fading in its efforts to retain free agent outfielder Jason Bay.

Lackey, 31, is 102-71 with a 3.81 ERA in eight seasons with the Angels, and he would join Josh Beckett and Jon Lester at the top of a powerhouse rotation in Boston. The Mariners, Angels and Mets are among the other teams interested in signing Lackey.

Entering the offseason, it was believed that Lackey would use A.J. Burnett's five-year, $82.5 million contract with the New York Yankees as a benchmark, but industry estimates of his potential haul have ranged from $60 million to $100 million.

Check off 'Add a significant bullpen arm' from the Hot Stove list of things to do for White Sox general manager Ken Williams.

One year to the Dec. 11 date of J.J. Putz being part of a three-team deal involving the Mariners, Indians and Mets, sending him from Seattle to New York, the right-hander agreed to terms with the White Sox on a one-year, $3-million contract, with up to $3 million in incentives for games finished. Putz, who turns 33 in February, is 23-19 with a 3.24 ERA, 103 saves and 356 strikeouts covering 337 career relief appearances and 352 1/3 innings pitched over seven Major League seasons.

Putz figures to take over Octavio Dotel's role as part of the late-inning setup crew, but when healthy, he also gives the White Sox yet another option to close behind Bobby Jenks. Judging by comments coming from general manager Ken Williams, speaking during a Friday afternoon conference call, Putz simply rounds out a top-notch pitching staff, with no major changes in roles.

"Obviously, Bobby [Jenks] is the closer, and then we have Matt Thornton, who can do a little bit of both, and now you have J.J. who also can do that, and everyone else fills in behind them," Williams said. "With the starters we have, starting in the sixth or seventh inning through the ninth, we have guys who can close games out.

"From the top of the rotation now through the end of the bullpen, we are as strong as we've ever been," Williams said.

As a part of the Mets in '09, Putz finished 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA, 10 holds and two saves in 29 games as a setup man to Francisco Rodriguez. Putz underwent a

- Call Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez the quick fixer. He has a track record of helping teams become playoff contenders.

After going 79-83 in 2002, the Marlins signed Rodriguez to a one-year deal and they went on to win the World Series over the Yankees the next year.

After that glorious 2003 season, Rodriguez signed a four-year, $40 million contract with the Tigers, who lost 119 games that year. He would help guide Detroit to the Fall Classic in 2006.

This past season, the Nationals lost 103 games, and Rodriguez believes the Nationals are in better shape than the Tigers were in 2004.

"I think [the Nationals] are better than [the '04 Tigers]," Rodriguez said. "In '04, it was a very challenging season for us, but we ended up winning 72 games. From 119 losses and being able to finish the season with 72 wins, it was a big improvement for us."

"[With the Nationals], I see this ballclub in a different way. It's a completely different team. The Nationals hit very well and they are going to pitch very well. I'm going to do my best behind the plate to make those guys do their job, lower their ERA and win."

Rodriguez is expected to become a clubhouse leader and help improve a pitching staff that had a 5.00 ERA, which was the worst in the National League. That shouldn't be a problem, said Jack McKeon, who is the Marlins special adviser to the owner. McKeon managed Rodriguez in '03.

"He is going help the young pitching staff develop," McKeon s

The Mariners' theme for the 2009 Winter Meetings was a game of dominoes, and as the team's entourage left Indianapolis on Thursday, the result of that game was one down and quite a few more to go.

Seattle pulled off the first big signing of the Meetings when it plucked leadoff man and multipurpose infielder Chone Figgins away from the American League West-rival Angels with a four-year, $36 million deal that includes an option for a fifth season.

Figgins figures to bat second behind Ichiro Suzuki and provide a dynamic one-two punch for the Mariners, who continue to remake their team with a model of strong defense and pitching plus speed, contact and aggressive baserunning.

"We landed a very nice piece," general manager Jack Zduriencik said of Figgins. "He was a guy we targeted, and we're still going to be active. There will be [more meetings] today before it's over."

Zduriencik was quick to point out that while Figgins was the only official Major League acquisition the Mariners pulled off while in Indianapolis (the club also announced Minor League signings of outfielder Corey Patterson and infielder Josh Wilson), Seattle had already made important deals that will impact the 2010 club.

The GM mentioned the restructuring of shortstop Jack Wilson's contract into a two-year, $10 million deal, and the one-year pact to bring back franchise icon and fan favorite Ken Griffey Jr. at

While they wait on their biggest target, the Cardinals addressed their second-most compelling move on Tuesday at baseball's annual Winter Meetings, signing right-hander Brad Penny to a one-year, $7.5 million contract, with incentives that could take the total value of the deal up to $9 million.

In addition, the Cardinals agreed that if Penny is a Type A free agent after the 2010 season, they will not offer him arbitration.

General manager John Mozeliak said that a Penny signing would not necessarily complicate the team's attempts to re-sign outfielder Matt Holliday.

"It's a reflection of what we've stated all along, that we're looking to sign a starting pitcher," Mozeliak said. "Short-term is something that we're interested in. In terms of [whether we can] still do more, the answer is yes."

Penny bolsters a St. Louis rotation that has the potential to be one of the league's best once again. He joins 2009 Cy Young candidates Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter, as well as veteran Kyle Lohse, in the Cardinals' starting five. The last spot is, as of now, likely to go to a pitcher from within the organization, with Jaime Garcia as the leading candidate.

However, Mozeliak acknowledged on Monday that that plan is no longer as certain as it once seemed. He left the door open to an additional pitching pickup, in the event that Holliday does not re-sign with the Cardinals.

For Penny, the deal represents something of a make-good opportunity, a chance to follow up a late-2009 resurgence. Penny, who will turn 32 next season, saw h

Before heading home from the Winter Meetings on Thursday afternoon, the busy Astros added another player to the fold by signing third baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Feliz joins the Astros one day after they traded three Minor Leaguers to the Florida Marlins for reliever Matt Lindstrom and reached a contract agreement with reliever Brandon Lyon -- a deal that has yet to be confirmed by the club, pending a physical.

"We're very pleased to add Pedro to our infield mix," Astros general manager Ed Wade said. "He's been an outstanding defensive player and a solid run-producer for his entire career. He played a premium position with a two-time World Series participant and was a key part of the Phillies' success. We're fortunate to have him on board."

Feliz, 34, played the previous two seasons with the Phillies, helping them win the World Series in 2008 and return to the Fall Classic in 2009. He hit .266 with 12 homers and 82 RBIs in 158 games last year for Philadelphia, which recently signed Placido Polanco to play third.

Feliz spent the first eight years of his career with the San Francisco Giants and is a career .254 hitter with 135 homers and 558 RBIs. Known more for his defense, Feliz will allow the Astros to move switch-hitter Geoff Blum around the infield in what Wade calls a "super utility" role.

Blum re-signed with the Astros for one year and $1.5 million in October. He hit .247 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 120 games last season with the Astros, spending most of his time at third base and committing only three errors.

The Yankees did not come to the Winter Meetings expecting to shake up the news cycle in front of the national baseball audience, but by Wednesday, they had certainly done that by officially acquiring All-Star center fielder Curtis Granderson in a seven-player trade involving the Tigers and D-backs.

With the biggest move of the week now complete, the Yankees can begin to pencil in lineups that include Granderson, immediately installed as the club's everyday center fielder and featuring a powerful left-handed stroke that will soon take aim at Yankee Stadium's short right-field porch.

"I'm not going to be the standout guy," Granderson said. "I'm not going to be the guy that you're constantly worried about. But if you don't keep an eye on me, hopefully, I can go and sneak in and do some positive things for our team."

The Yankees had to give up something to get the affable 28-year-old, and that meant that general manager Brian Cashman had to send outfield prospect Austin Jackson and left-hander phil coke
to Detroit while also shipping right-hander Ian Kennedy to Arizona.

In the other pieces of the deal, the D-backs acquired right-hander Edwin Jackson from the Tigers, and Detroit obtained right-hander Max Scherzer and left-hander Daniel Schlereth from Arizona.

Granderson hit .249 with 30 home runs, 71 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 160 games for the Tigers in 2009, and the All-Star said that his versatility and willingness to hit anywhere in the line

Attention Tiger fans!!!The Hall of Fame balloting has begun but do not expect any Tiger to be

Joe Mauer, who won an unprecedented third batting championship for a catcher and helped propel the Minnesota Twins to the American League Central title, was elected the AL Most Valuable Player for 2009 in balloting by the BBWAA.

Mauer, the first catcher to lead his league in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.444) and slugging (.587) in the same season, was listed first on all but one of the 28 ballots cast by two writers in each league city. He was second on that other ballot to score a total of 387 points, based on a tabulation system rewarding 14 points for first place, nine for second, eight for third on down to one for 10th.

The other first-place vote was cast for Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera (.324, 34 HR, 103 RBI), who finished fourth in the overall balloting with 171 points, behind a pair of New York Yankees teammates, first baseman Mark Teixeira (.292, 39 HR, 122 RBI, 103 R) and shortstop Derek Jeter (.334, 18 HR, 107 R, 30 SB).

Teixeira, who led the league in runs batted in and total bases (344) and tied Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena for the lead in home runs, totaled 225 points and Jeter 193. Teixeira's best previous finish in MVP voting was seventh in 2005 for the Texas Rangers. Jeter also finished third in 1998 and was the runner-up in 2006. Mauer, Teixeira, Jeter and Cabrera were named on every ballot. In all, 27 players gained mention.

This wasn't an announcement. It was a coronation. Then again, a case could be made that the entire 2009 season fit that description for Albert Pujols.

Long since established as one of baseball's great players, Pujols emerged as the game's dominant figure in 2009. On Tuesday, the Baseball Writers' Association of America once again recognized him as such, naming Pujols the National League Most Valuable Player in a unanimous decision.

Pujols received all 32 first-place votes, good for 448 ballot points. Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez garnered 15 second-place votes and 233 points. First baseman Ryan Howard of the Phillies was a close third with 217 points. He was followed by Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder and Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

It's the second straight year that Pujols has won the award, and the third time overall. He is the 10th player in history to win three MVPs, and the fifth to win it three times in the National League. He is the 12th player to win back-to-back MVP awards. The last was Barry Bonds, who won it four straight years from 2001-04.

From now on, when Tim Lincecum steps onto the pitcher's mound, he'll stand alone in more ways than one.

Many pitchers have recorded more victories and strikeouts than Lincecum. Several have earned more Cy Young Awards. None, however, thrived to the extent that Lincecum has during a career that has been as brilliant as it is brief.

On Thursday, Lincecum became the only pitcher to capture the Cy Young Award in each of his first two full Major League seasons. The Giants right-hander was named the National League's repeat winner Thursday in balloting conducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

"It's a tremendous honor for me," said Lincecum, 25. "To be up there and do what I've done means the world."

Several aspects of Lincecum's triumph combined novelty with history:

• This was one of the closest Cy Young votes ever. In balloting that assigned five points for a first-place vote, three for a second-place vote and one for a third-place nod, Lincecum totaled 100 points and 11 first-place votes. He edged St. Louis right-handers Chris Carpenter (nine first-place votes, 94 points) and Adam Wainwright (12 first-place votes, 90 points).

"Both the guys I was going up against had tremendous seasons," Lincecum said, calling Wainwright a "workhorse" and praising Carpenter's speedy comeback from injuries.

The 10-point margin separating the top three finishers was the second-closest in NL voting. It's exceeded only by the 1987 results, in which Philadelphia reliever Steve Bedrosian edged Chicago's Rick Sutclif

Zack Greinke won again on Tuesday -- this time taking the Cy Young Award as the American League's best pitcher -- and he did it in a landslide.

The Royals' right-hander received a rousing 25 of 28 first-place votes and had 134 total points in the Baseball Writers' Association of America voting. Runner-up Felix Hernandez of the Mariners had 80 points, with two first-place votes.

The remaining first-place vote went to the Tigers' Justin Verlander, who was third in the balloting with 14 points. Also receiving votes were the Yankees' CC Sabathia (13) and the Blue Jays' Roy Halladay (11).

Hernandez, Verlander and Sabathia all were 19-game winners, and there was the suggestion that Greinke's 16-8 record, a rather modest win total for a Cy Young winner, might override his Major League-best ERA of 2.16. But that did not happen.

Greinke thought Hernandez, who was 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA, would get more support.

"I was really surprised at that," Greinke said. "I thought Felix had an amazing year and that he would get a little more credit than he did with that. Everything was fantastic with him, and I thought it'd be closer than it was between the two of us."

Certainly, there was no argument that Greinke was one of the most dominating pitchers of 2009 in either league. His performance and his award brightens what was a disappointing season for the Royals.

"Zack Greinke has always been a potentially tremendous talent, and we were all fortunate to watch him perform this past year," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. &q

It's been more than eight years since that fateful summer of 2001, when Chris Coghlan's father was killed just days before the Marlins infielder-turned-outfielder's 16th birthday.

On Monday afternoon, when he was named the winner of the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award for the National League, Coghlan couldn't help but think of his dad, Tim Coghlan, and how he must be beaming with pride about his son right now.

"I know my dad is watching from heaven with a smile on his face," Coghlan said. "It makes me smile outside and inside, because he was the one who instilled the work ethic in me and taught me the game."

A lot of tears were shed when Coghlan suddenly lost his father in a fatal car accident. But there were plenty of smiles to go around on this day.

This was the day Coghlan's astonishing adjustments to a new fielding position and spot in the lineup received its due diligence, the day everything he's been taught about baseball throughout his entire young life -- lessons from coaches, teammates and, of course, his dad -- came to fruition.

With Monday's announcement by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, Coghlan -- the Marlins' prized prospect from Tarpon Springs, Fla. -- joined American League winner Andrew Bailey of the Athletics, other Marlins honorees in Dontrelle Willis (2003) and Hanley Ramirez ('06), and former ROY winners like Ryan Howard, Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki.

Time will tell whether this award vaults him onto a career path as successful as those of Howard, Jeter, Pujols and Suzuki. But Coghlan isn't one

A's right-hander Andrew Bailey got the call from New York at 12:30 p.m. ET on Monday and was told to "keep it under wraps."

He assumed, however, that it was safe to let his parents in on the secret: His rise from Minor League obscurity to Major League limelight turned historic when he was named the American League's 2009 Rookie of the Year.

"My dad couldn't believe it," Bailey told MLB.com by phone shortly after the announcement. "He had been reading all these articles about who had voted for who, and everyone kind of thought Elvis [Andrus of the Rangers] was going to win. So when I told him, he was like, 'No way. Are you kidding? Really?'

"When I called my mom, she just started laughing. And then she started crying."

Andrus, Texas' acrobatic 21-year-old shortstop, finished second in the voting, which was carried out by selected members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Bailey, 25, posted 26 saves -- no other AL rookie reliever had more than two -- with a 1.84 ERA, also the best among AL rookies. He was listed first on 13 ballots submitted by two writers in each AL city, second on six and third on five to score 88 points, based on a 5-3-1 tabulation system.

Andrus, who batted .267 and led AL rookies in hits (128), runs (72), triples (8), total bases (179) and stolen bases (33), placed first on eight ballots, second on six and third on seven for 65 points -- one point more than Tigers righty starter Rick Porcello (14-9, 3.96 ERA), who was first on seven ballots, second on eight and third on five for 64 points.

Get ready for another season with Junior.

Ken Griffey Jr. and the Mariners reached an agreement Wednesday on a one-year contract, perhaps the final pact of Griffey's Hall of Fame career.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But it could be similar to the one he had a year ago. Griffey received a $2 million base salary and $3 million more in incentive bonuses, half of which he reached.

"I'd like to thank the Mariners organization for inviting me back to play in 2010," Griffey said in a statement. "While 2009 was an awesome experience for me, my ultimate goal is for the Mariners to get to and win the World Series.

"To that end, I look forward to contributing in any role that [manager] Don [Wakamatsu] sees fit on the field, and any manner I possibly can off the field."

Griffey, who will turn 40 on Nov. 21, batted .214, hit 19 home runs, drove in 57 runs and led the team with 63 walks in 117 games, an indication that even with his lowest career single-season batting average, he commanded the utmost respect from opposing pitchers

Derek Jeter has entered his golden years. On Tuesday the 35-year-old Yankees shortstop re-entered the American League Gold Glove team.

With his fourth award for defensive excellence, the first since the last of three straight, in 2006, Jeter became the second-oldest player so honored at the position, a young man's turf.

The AL Gold Glove club also welcomed back senior members Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners and Torii Hunter of the Angels, who shared their ninth consecutive outfield awards.

Joining Suzuki and Hunter was Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones, one of three newcomers on an honor squad normally as difficult to crash as a private party.

The other "rookies" were Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longori
