On Monday, Rep. Ted Poe took to the House floor to discuss foreign policy matters. To make a point, the Texas Republican invoked the words of Civil War Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest: “Git thar fustest with the mostest.” The quotation got some floor watchers’ attention pretty quickly. Forrest is a controversial figure who was one of the Klan’s first grand wizards. Although the Civil War hero (if you were a Confederate, that is) ultimately abandoned the Klan for its violent tactics, he continues to kick up dust. “Controversial figure” doesn’t quite cut it. Most lists of the worst Americans in U.S. history include Nathan Bedford Forrest near the top. That’s what happens when someone creates the KKK to terrorize freed slaves and their allies, after taking up arms against the United States. What on earth would possess a GOP lawmaker to quote Forrest on the House floor? Poe’s spokesperson told Roll Call, “The reference to Forrest was used in an historical context comparing the request to Congress for support of the Confederate troops to the request that is being made today by our Generals in Iraq.” First, the comparison doesn’t make any sense. Second, when one bolsters their argument with the words of one of the most controversial Americans ever, rationalizing it as a historical comparison is unpersuasive. Shouldn’t this be a bigger deal? Given all of the racial problems of the Republican Party, isn’t it rather scandalous for a Republican lawmaker to rely on the words of the founder of the KKK? McMichael - Staff writer Posted : Sunday May 13, 2007 9:49:16 EDT Writer Jane Sellman once said that the phrase "working mother" is redundant. That's especially true of mothers in uniform — all 121,701 of them who serve in the active military branches and reserves. And even more so for the 7,243 who are currently deployed overseas and whose husbands or kids won't be taking them out to brunch on Mother's Day this Sunday. The Army leads the way on total mothers in uniform, with 27,400, followed closely by the Air Force's 23,106, according to Defense Department statistics. The Navy has 16,034 moms in the fold; the Marines, 2,822. Among the reserve components, the Army National Guard has 14,762 mothers; the Army Reserve, 14,659. Given its heavy involvement with the war in Iraq, the Army, as one might expect, has more mothers deployed — 3,496 — than any other service. A total of 996 moms are deployed with the Air Force; 869 with the Navy; 647 with the Army National Guard; 644 with the Army Reserve; and 240 with the Navy Reserve. There are also 147 Marine Corps moms on deployment; 97 with the Air National Guard; 95 with the Air Force Reserve; and 11 with the Marine Corps Reserve. And one with the Coast Guard.
