MAKE QUORN VEGAN CAMPAIGN's Blurbs |
About me:
The mission
Upon becoming a friend of the Make Quorn Vegan Campaign you must do two things:
1] Email us at seditionarymissionary@hotmail.co.uk with your thoughts and input.
2] SPREAD THE WORD and recruit more people for this vital campaign. Those with large amounts of money which they are willing to donate will be welcomed especially warmly.
It is the intention of this myspace site to put pressure on Marlow Foods to change their recipe for for the benefit of all. These days Quorn has become very high profile and there is a huge selection of products available in most supermarkets. Once we have achieved enough myspace friends to appear credible we will approach Marlow Foods with this ‘proof’ of public opinion/demand. Their response will be posted for all to see. There is as yet no timescale for the campaign, however, the sooner the better methinks. Your comments will be much appreciated.
Ingredients - All Quorn products contain egg white and most contain milk ingredients. No Quorn products are therefore currently suitable for a vegan diet.
Recent success of Quorn - The Quorn range was launched in 1985 by Marlow foods and 500,000 Quorn meals are now eaten every day in the UK.
Potential Sales Increase - It is estimated that there are between over 250,000 to as many as 345,000 vegans in the UK. Additionally there are many others unable to consume Quorn products. These people include around 5,500,000 million who suffer from lactose intolerance as well as smaller numbers who are allergic to milk and eggs. Changing Quorn recipes to remove egg and milk ingredients could therefore lead to a significant increase in sales for the company.
Sustainability - Removing milk and egg ingredients would also have implications for sustainability due to the high relative land use associated with the production of eggs and milk compared with vegetables. For example, it takes 3.5 and 1.2 m2 of land to produce a kg of eggs and milk respectively, compared with only 0.3 m2 to produce a kg of vegetables.
Animal Welfare - There are also important animal welfare issues associated with milk and egg production. Even though Quorn products are made with egg white from free range hens, the reality of life for free range hens is often less than idyllic. They are often kept in sheds housing up to 16,000 birds, are often debeaked and, although they must be able to access outdoor areas, in reality often fewer than half the birds regularly go outside. As with other commercial laying hens, they are usually slaughtered after a year of laying.
GM foods - On a more positive note, Marlow Foods state that no GM ingredients are used in their products.
Health Issues - Marlow foods are keen to promote Quorn products as being a healthy alternative. Research shows that a 100 per cent vegan diet is potentially the best for vegan health. Therefore by removing egg white and milk from their recipes, Marlow Foods could maximise the health benefits they claim to be associated with the Quorn range.
What is a good substitute for eggs?
Ener-G Egg Replacer - follow directions on box.
2 tbsp corn starch.
1 tbsp arrowroot, 1 tbsp soya flour and 2 tbsp water.
2 tbsp potato starch.
1 heaping tbsp soy powder + 2 tbsp water.
1 tbsp soy milk powder + 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water.
1 banana = 1 egg in cakes.
1 tbsp gram (chick pea) or 1 tbsp arrowroot, 1 tbsp soya flour and 2 tbsp water soya flour and 1 tbsp water.
2 tbsp flour, ½ tbsp shortening, ½ tsp baking powder and 2 tsp water.
50g tofu blended with the liquid portion of the recipe.
50 ml white sauce.
So come on 'Quorn', it's that easy and cheap!!!!!
Message from Quorn;
".....We will continue to search for acceptable alternatives to eggs and fully assess new ingredients as they come onto the market place, but at present we can unfortunately give no indication of when and indeed if this will ever be achieved. - Terry Ainsley, Consumer Care Advisor"

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who supports us in our quest to make Quorn acceptable for everyone.

Any thoughts, good or bad are most welcome. Some recent messages:
Good luck with that - I tried contacting them a few years back about it - but they said most people aren't vegan so they didn't seem to care very much - but maybe now...? It's worth trying. Also can you do fruit gums next?!
Take care,
Hi,
Did you know that Quorn was tested on animals during its development? and along with the ghastly TVP do we really want another artificial highly processed "food"?
I have been vegan for many years so have never tried the stuff....
I know there are plenty of good wholesome vegan convenience foods out there, but first of all we should be eating fresh, wholesome living plant foods with vitality not factory invented junk.Think of the fossil fuels and energy wasted making it!
A better campaign would be to make veggies and vegans realise that most organic food involves the use of blood ,fish, bonemeal, animal manures and that the promotion of stockfree-organic/veganic methods as promoted by VON(Vegan Organic Network)is the way forward....
All the best,
The trouble is that Quorn is made by Premier Foods who have a boycott call out on them, mainly for animal rights abuses.
