Gabrial Holmes.
I write/perform, record and produce all my music. I'm open to working with others.
Influences
I am influenced by friends, family, lovers, and tragedy. The past, the future, failure and success. I write songs that have meanings that are not always apparent, and many of them will probably never be decoded. I spent years singing along with The Beatles and The Doors. I like Joy Division. I also listen to The Helio Sequence, The Shins, Death Cab For Cutie, and The Chemical Brothers. I have a huge attraction to Electronic music which is apparent in my music.
Sounds Like
Psychedelic indie synth pop. I perform using a Kimball Superstar Organ, Thomas Organ, Roland DrumMachine, Roland Amps, various Virtual Studio Technology plug-ins for FL Studio, many of my digital synthesizers were designed by Krakil software. I use many toy keyboards for samples that I am working on circuit bending. I don't know what kind of mics I use but they're kind of cheap. I record on a Tascam Portastudio four track cassette recorder and also digitally using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and FL Studio. My music is keyboard driven, mostly downbeat electronic, with a lot of organ run through a phaser guitar effects pedal. My lyrics are often thoughtful, occasionally whimsical, tinged with both torment and optimism, my songs are mostly either very personal but described in indirect terms, or very open ended with broad themes that you'll have to define yourself. Most of my music begins as a mashup ideas that slowly get filtered into something coherent. I structure my songs in a way that feels comfortable to me, but most will probably find it half assed.
Makeshift Battlefield was created by me, Gabrial Holmes, in 2006. After years of directionless songwriting and depression abruptly ended, my music took on a new life late in 2007. A student of art and design, I divide my time between visual and audio arts. Inspired by the Psychedelic movement of the 1960's and the New Wave movement of the 1980's, I create music that sets firmly in the realm of Electronic Psychedelia. Since 2006 I have finished four full length CDs, and many smaller projects. Very rarely do they reach public exposure. In 2008 I reached a new level of songwriting, composing music with my Kimball Superstar Electronic Organ. I recently gave out 100 free copies of 'The Free Album' at BlissFest. 'The Free Album' consisted of new songs that, regrettably were too hurried. Only a few tracks were anything close to complete. My next small release will be a CD that includes the best songs from all four of my previous collections. Thanks for listening.
