"Fall Into Her Love Trap" and "Blame Game" would have been perfect if they came out in the 1980's and filmmaker John Huges needed a song for a Molly Ringwald montage in one of his teen angst movies...Makeupbreakup embodies that intellectual yet playful aesthetic on "We Prefer Not To..."
-Outburn Magazine
With more than a tip of the synth drum in the direction of Depeche Mode , New Order , Numan and Visage the duo are a deadly combination of the first wave of electronic pop and the 21st century MDMA fueled wave of electroclash." Read More
"We Prefer Not To... is far from being bad. It's smokey-tinged blasts of synth pop are absurdly catchy and ready to fill dance floors. Even those with two left feet will find it difficult to resist having a go...It is darkly entertaining stuff that's got its eyes and ears on the dance floor and wants to do nothing else but stay there... underneath the strobes and skittish lighting" -First Coast News Florida
"With a sound that somehow mixes “Golden Years” David Bowie with the best aspects of Depeche Mode, catchy hooks made up of Moog riffs so sweet they should come with a FDA warning for diabetics are just a given." - Popwreckoning
"...Indie guitars and relationship scars make for great bedfellows, and MakeUpBreakUp uses the rousing power of electro to toss off the covers and open the blinds for a stirring jolt of lyrically embittered pop music. Tonally clean hooks meld with sweeping synths and processed vocals to create a perfect counterpoint to Cat Power on that mixtape destined for your ex's P.O. box." Read More
BIO:
Forming in the summer of 2007, Makeupbreakup has been catching the ears, eyes, and libidos of the public from the start. Only two shows deep, and with a handful of pop-minded indie/electonica demos in hand, Mikeylams and Zan (formerly of A Trillion Barnacle Lapse, Rockethouse, and Groupthink fame) signed to California's S.A.F. Records for the release of "We Prefer Not To…", the duo’s debut EP. Unveiled to the world on August 19th, 2008, "We Prefer Not To…" has received widespread critical acclaim, being sonically linked to New Order, John Hughes soundtracks, and “Golden Years” Bowie, culminating in a glossy spot in Outburn Magazine. Local recognition was also in order, as The Providence Phoenix named "We Prefer Not To…" among the best local albums of the year. Similar success followed over the radio waves, with the EP charting as high as 120 on the CMJ 200 charts, and holding its ground for more than a month. The boys have continually supported the EP on the road, with three east coast tours, and opening slots for national indie acts such as Inner Party System, Diplo, and Health.
With the New Year underway, Makeupbreakup has been characteristically fertile, rounding out their live line-up with a permanent rhythm section, and putting the finishing touches on their debut LP, "SCENTS", to be released at a time TBD. You can catch Makeupbreakup on tour this year, or posted up at the bar at Chilangos in Providence, sitting on horse saddles, drinking colorful margaritas, and discussing the functions and merits of the reptile brain.
