No me propuse formar una banda. Hace tres años, inmediatamente después de que mi grupo anterior se desbandara, empecé a componer canciones para un proyecto solo. En mis primeras presentaciones, invité a familiares y amigos a llenar los espacios en los arreglos; hasta mi hermanita me ayudó con voces de fondo y unos amigos cercanos con la batería y percusión. En aquel tiempo me dedicaba a ayudar a manejar un sello disquero ahora desaparecido mientras continuaba componiendo material y preparando demos.
Al final del 2007, desarrollé la visión de lanzar un EP que tuviera cada uno de sus temas en tanto inglés como español, y cuyas letras estuvieran inspiradas or la historia de mi país natal Panamá. Me llevé a mi hermano, y a nuestros amigos de infancia Brendan Culp y Nic Kolar de gira, presentándonos por toda la región central del país y hasta aventurándonos a Miami. Lanzamos el EP Tierra Firme y, cien presentaciones después, sin darnos cuenta habíamos formado una banda. Mi hermano decidió dejar el grupo y el resto nos solidificamos en esta banda, fijándonos la meta de crear Salsa de Nueva Ola: música con sones afrocubanos que apoyaran a melodías interpretadas con el aplomo del rock and roll.
Incorporamos al percusionista y timbalero de salsa Juan Carlos Chaurand, y con su contribución finalmente hemos empezado a lograr lo que me había propuesto hacer. Making Movies recientemente tuvo el honor de participar en una gira limitada con el legendario grupo de música latina alternativa Aterciopelados, y ahora estamos lanzando el sencillo Libertad, con su video, el primero de una serie de sencillos que conducirán a nuestro álbum de debut. Gracias a todos los que están escuchando, habrá mucho más en el futuro próximo.
I didn't set out to form a band. Three years ago, on the heels of breaking up with my old band I started writing some songs for a solo project. At my first shows I invited my family and friends to fill out the arrangements, even my baby sister helped out with some background vocals with close friends on drums and percussion. I was busy helping run a now defunct record label while I continued to write and demo material.
At the end of 2007, I got the vision to release an EP that had every song in both English and Spanish and was lyrically inspired by the history of my native home Panama. I dragged my brother, childhood friends Brendan Culp and Nic Kolar on tour playing all over the Midwest and even venturing down to Miami. We released the
Tierra Firme EP and, one-hundred shows later, had inadvertently formed a band. My brother moved on from the group and the rest of us solidified into a band with the goal of creating New Wave Salsa: music with afro-cuban grooves supporting melodies played with the swagger of rock and roll.
We incorporated salsa percussionist and timbalero Juan Carlos Chaurand and with his input are finally started to achieve what I set out to do. Making Movies recently had honor of doing a small tour with Latin Alternative legends Aterciopelados and we are releasing the Libertad single and video, the first in a series of singles leading up to our debut album.
