I can’t stop listening to this thing. Malachai, let’s go get hitched and make crazy babies. (JG)
Splendid E-Zine (Top pick)
When he’s on, Malachai's guitar driven punkish funk recalls Pavement and the rowdier side of Fugazi's blooze -- but he changes it up. -Shawn McCormack
Sponiczine (Top pick)
What a beautifully kicked-over garbage can of a record! Jesus, it’s weird. But Mike Fxxxxx (Malachai’s evil genius) has a playful ear for the good stitch, combining the Beach Boys with the Velvet Underground and batting old school hip hop within a few dusty Fall LPs. He’s like the indie music store clerk version of Beck, his pastiche drawn from the harder, the less polished, the further afield. These Sounds of the Spirit World is a noisy mix tape with more nods than it would be sane to name, all wrapped up in a spit-toothed punk sensibility. -Terry Sawyer
Impact Press
The songs jump back and forth from garage punk to electro clash to indie experimentation. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I just don't quite know what to make of it yet. You'd have to listen for yourself to decide. (MC)
MaximumRockNRoll
MALACHAI does this updated wave-punk sound as well as any of the others. Troll away! (RW)
Left Of the Dial
Malachai's goal is to see how many different genres can be crammed into one song rather than getting across a clear musical feeling to the listener. (NH)
Lost At Sea
Malachai has nothing to offer anyone over twelve year old potty humor. -Review by by Kevin Alfoldy
Mashnote Magazine
Making it through the whole disc requires some steel nerves. Maybe you've got those qualities and should get this album. I'm gonna wait untill the single's out to hear how Malachai will make some kids dance.
Delusions of Adequacy
I’ve really been dreading doing this review for the simple fact that Malachai is, in all likelihood, the most schizophrenic band I’ve ever laid my ears upon. - Tyler, 2/23/05

SM was the jam, except I was surrounded by 500 Twin Cities scene kids. John Vanderslice, however, is a blonde-haired, 40-year-old emo fuck and should be shunned by society.
