Bio
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... One of the hardest working blues guitarists in London and T-Bone Walker obsessive, I moved to London in 2002 after 12 years in Edinburgh. Since then, I've played with the best of the South East blues scene all over the UK and Europe - including appearances with Kurt Crandall, Jerimiah Marques & the Blue Aces, West Weston's Bluesonics, Pete G & the MagniTones, the Eric Ranzoni Trio, Sam Hare (as Hucklebuck and Soul Junction), Oo-Bop-Sh'Bam, and Gentleman Tim & the Contenders. Currently I may be seen on stage playing West Coast blues with The Cadillac Kings or soulful blues with Big Mamma's Door... Influences
I'm deeply into original blues and swing artists like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian, BB-King - in fact all the Kings! - Johnny Guitar Watson, Magic Sam, Muddy Waters and Hollywood Fats. I also dig rockabilly cats like Scotty Moore and Cliff Gallup. Contemporary influences include Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Jimmie Vaughan, Nick Curran and Junior Watson. -
Sounds Like
..What people say:.... 'Mal played an old guitar that came straight out of the 50's. Looking nothing less than a plank of wood with strings attached, the different tones he squeezed out of it all night was miraculous. This was all done without the aid of any effects pedals too, making his guitar playing all the more impressive...'.. [Minty and the Beeb Blogspot].. 'Mal's guitar is perfectly toned – vintage, fat and warm and his playing is his own blend of T-Bone, Junior Watson and other hollow body legends.'.. [Ken Peace, Blues in The Northwest.].. '...we have seen some fabulous bands over in the US and most of them would struggle to keep up with our home grown talent in the Cadillac Kings'.. [Pete Evans, Goin' Up The Country blues and roots Club.].. 'Do you like those swinging, 40's/50's inspired, West Coast blues so beloved by harp players like James Harman, Rod Piazza and Lynwood Slim? Are you thrilled by tone, phrasing and sheer creativity of guitarists like Junior Watson and Alex Schultz? Do you love the slick humour and hip jive talk that Rick Estrin and James Harman invest their lyrics with? If so, you'll love The Cadillac Kings!'.. [Mick Rainsford, Blues in Britain.].. '....his Les Paul Gold Top sounding quite magnificent, in a vintage way – indeed, his playing was superb all set.'.. [Grahame Rhodes, Blues in The North West.].. '...always impresses ...his great combination of taste, touch, and tone lift tunes out of the ordinary and imbue a solid rectitude to proceedings'.. [David Atkinson, Blues in London.].. '...a fabulous player with lovely retro feel and tone to his soloing and rhythm work'.. [Grahame Rhodes, Chester Chronicle.].. 'He's got a sparkly tele, he's got a snakeskin guitar strap... all that hard work, let down by the brown trainers...'.. [Ian Siegal].. ..Listens to:.... .. .................... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .................................................. ..Plays about on:.... 1953 Gibson Es-350, 1959 Harmony H62, Harmony Stratotone H44, Fender Stratocaster, Bacchus guitars, Peterson tuners, Vanamps Reverbamate and Victoria amplifiers... ..............
