We are proud to present the very first CD issued on Muziekpublique’s brand new label.

Malick Pathé Sow is an extremely talented Senegalese artist. Following loyal service as one of Baaba Maal’s main musicians, he embarked on a solo career after he arrived in Belgium. This is his fourth CD and it marks a return to his acoustic roots.

“Maayo Men” captures all the warmth, beauty and authenticity of Senegalese music. It pays tribute to the Laawbe, instrument makers and musicians who have traditionally taken responsibility for the oral transmission of knowledge between generations. Malian writer Amadou Hampâté Bâ has commented: “In Africa, when an old man dies, it's a library burning.” Malick’s CD aims to capture some of this rich oral tradition, painting a vivid picture of the everyday life and culture of the Fula people.

Maayo Men (“our river”) pays tribute to the river Senegal, a natural border between Senegal and Mauritania. After years of conflict, this waterway has become a meeting place for the Fuuta Toro region where dugout canoes from the two countries pass each other peacefully. The themes dealt with in this first Muziekpublique CD (protection of the environment, preservation of linguistic and cultural heritage, respect for diversity …) are as relevant in the musicians’ home countries as they are here in Belgium.

Malick’s vocal melodies will be served with a spicy instrumental mix cooked up by his fellow musicians playing the guitar, the hoddu (African lute), the kora (African harp), the nianiooru (African violin) and even the saz (Turkish lute)!

Malick Pathé Sow, joueur de hoddu que l'on a pu voir aux côtés des plus grandes stars du Sénégal comme Baaba Maal ou Ernest Ranglin, a développé sa carrière solo depuis son arrivée en Belgique et ce quatrième album marque un grand retour à l'acoustique.

"Maayo Men" recèle toute la chaleur, la beauté et l'authenticité de la musique traditionnelle sénégalaise et plus précisément celles des Laawbe, caste d’artisans, de luthiers et de musiciens qui accordent une place primordiale à l’oralité du savoir. Rythmée au son lancinant de sa guitare ou de son hoddu (luth africain), sa voix douce ne cesse d’envoûter l’auditeur. Ce blues acoustique et paisible issu des guitare, basse et batterie, veille à redonner une place de choix aux superbes instruments traditionnels que sont le hoddu (luth africain), la kora (harpe africaine), le nianiooru (violon africain) ou encore le saz (luth turc!).

A travers ses hommages à des personnages aussi influents que méconnus, c’est toute la culture du peuple peulh qui est ici esquissée. L’adage d’ Amadou Hampaté Bâ “un vieillard qui meurt, c’est une bibliothèque qui brûle” est mis à l’honneur à la manière d’une émouvante dédicace. Maayo Men (notre fleuve) rend hommage au Sénégal, une frontière aquatique devenue, après des années de conflit, un lieu de rencontre où se croisent pirogues sénégalaises et mauritaniennes.

La nature, la question du patrimoine linguistique et l’appel à l’unité au-delà des différences, sont autant de thématiques aussi actuelles dans le pays d’origine que dans le pays d’accueil de ces musiciens, réunis à Matonge pour la création du premier cd de Muziekpublique.

Met Maayo Men keert Malick Pathe Sow terug naar de roots van de Peuhl-muziek met zachte, akoestische blues waarbij de traditionele instrumenten een vooraanstaande rol spelen. Malick komt uit een oude kaste van Senegalese Laawbe, traditioneel instrumentenbouwers en zangers, vergelijkbaar met de griots. Zij dragen bij de Peulh, een nomadenvolk uit West-Afrika, de mondelinge kennis over van vader op zoon. Met Maayo Men zet Malick Pathe Sow op zijn eigen manier die traditie verder. “Amadou Hampaté Bâ verwoordde het ooit als volgt : « Wanneer in Afrika een oude man sterft, gaat er een bibliotheek in vlammen op. Ik wil dat onze geschiedenis blijft voortleven ».

Op Maayo Men (onze rivier) staat de rivier Senegal centraal, die loopt door midden de Fuuta Toro. Ondanks recentere conflicten, wijst Malick op de vroegere functie van de rivier als ontmoetingsplaats voor de Peulh van Senegal en Mauretanië en als symbool voor vrede en vruchtbaarheid. Malick Pathe Sow vereeuwigt op dit volledig akoestische album belangrijke historische figuren en gebeurtenissen die dreigen vergeten te worden. Hij zingt over de bescherming van (minderheids)talen, roept op tot samenleven in verscheidenheid en maakt zich zorgen om het milieu en de natuur. Deze thema’s zijn even actueel in het land van oorsprong als in de huidige leefwereld van de muzikanten die elkaar vinden in Matonge, de zwarte wijk van Brussel.
