Malik is a multitalented producer, musician and performer from Detroit, Michigan. He has studied vocal music and electrical engineering at Wayne State University. Malik has acted and sung in several touring gospel plays, including Sunday Morning and Where Is My Father. Malik has performed as a background singer and in concert choirs and live recording sessions with artists such as James Cleveland, Mattie Moss Clark, the Clark Sisters, the Winans, Donald Vails’ Voices of Deliverance, the Hawkins Family, Thomas Whitfield and the Gospel Music Workshop of America. He has appeared as a featured vocalist with gospel and R&B artist Ortheia Barnes, Rejoice Community Choir, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, and as founder of several early groups including The Voices of Joy and the group Love. His vocal career led to founding the band Planet Pluto in 1996, where he enhanced his skills as a keyboardist. Planet Pluto's members included fellow musicians Dwele, Siddiq (from Platinum Pied Pipers), and Cen Dervin (formerly with Black Bottom Collective).
He has been warmly received in performances on tour as a vocalist with Dwele, as a keyboardist with Paul Randolph, and in concert at the Hothouse in Chicago, just to name a few. Malik performed with John Arnold and Ayro at the first Third Party Candidate show (improv at its finest). He has entertained audiences at Movement 07: Detroit's Electronic Movement Festival (presenting selections from his new solo project, This Music Is Life), 2007 Comerica CityFest, 2006 African World Festival, 2006 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida with a special performance, The Pocket: This Music Is Life, 2006 Woodbridge Summerfest, Movement 06: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival (special guest appearance with Louie Vega), 2005 Fuse-In: Detroit's Electronic Movement (with Mike Clark), 2005 Motor City Music Conference, Movement 04: Detroit's Electronic Movement Festival (Painted Pictures), a very special solo concert appearance at Club Module in Tokyo, Japan in 2003 (featured artist, Beatdown Sessions Series), 2003 Movement Festival (with Dwayne Jensen), the 2000 - 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festivals (with Mike Clark, Alton Miller).
Malik produced several poetry and music events at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1999 and 2001-2002. The crowd-pleasing events featured original music & performances by Malik along with stellar musicians including Jerry the Cat, Siddiq (from Platinum Pied Pipers) and Woods. Featured spoken word artists performed including Ulysses Newkirk II, Khary Kimani Turner, Annodal, Aurora Harris, and Boogie. Malik was a featured artist in the Detroit Public Library’s Noontime Concert Series. His poetry and music performances have been featured with the poetry troupe EmRuop and in concert with the Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron and Jessica Care Moore.
He has produced events for The Pocket in Detroit at 5th Avenue Downtown, a monthly series hosted by Truth Manifest Records in 2005-2006 that featured new and established artists and DJ's. The Pocket featured many artists such as Malik Alston & Friends, Painted Pictures, Joshua Adams, Pirahnahead, Doc Link, Javontte, Craig Huckaby, Allan Barnes Trio, Martin Luther, Amp Fiddler, John Arnold, Sean Blackman, Ayro, Bill Beaver, Khary Kimani Turner, Dwele, Slum Village, Phat Kat, Finale, Invincible, Marv Won, Roy Davis, Jr., Mike Clark, Norm Talley, Dwayne Jensen, DJ Minx, Keith Worthy, Al McKenzie and Penny Wells, :brownstudy, Ziam, Lola Valley, Funkilinium, Gorilla Funk Mob featuring Neco Redd, 87, Fluent. He also produced Creation at the Finite Gallery, a fall music series in 2006 featuring artists including Malik Alston, Jimpster, Jerry the Cat, Rick Wilhite, diamondancer, Jerome Derradji, Mark da Spark, Dwayne Jensen, Ayro, Painted Pictures, Sound Circle Collective, Angel A.
Malik's highly anticipated new solo release for 2007 is This Music Is Life (Truth Manifest Records). He also released the Soulatin EP from This Music Is Life in 2007. The new releases have gotten rave reviews and a very strong buzz from music industry and music lovers alike. Malik’s explorations into the finer points of soul-stirring music also include Malik's Mind in 1997, Poetic Reflections in 2000 and Conscious Exposure and Dinner Music, both released in 2001 (Truth Manifest Records). Malik has released a well-received solo EP, Caterpillar in 2003 (Third Ear Recordings).
As the founder of Painted Pictures in 2001, Malik has explored provocative and original jazzfusionhouse, funk and soul. Painted Pictures released its well-received debut projects, Tuxedo Sessions, in 2004 (Truth Manifest Records) and the Tuxedo Sessions Japan Edition in 2005 (Truth Manifest Records/P-Vine Records). The band continues to entertain diverse audiences and is currently in the studio working on its next project, to be released in 2008.
A few highlights from Malik's extensive discography: he is one of the featured artists on the Fusicology Spring 06 Sampler compilation, Mahogani Music compilation, Detroit Beatdown Vol. 1 compilation (Third Ear Recordings), the Detroit Beatdown Remixes and Detroit Beatdown In The Mix compilations (Third Ear Recordings), Rolando: From There To Here and Now compilation (NRK Sound Division Ltd.); the African Diaspora Vol. II compilation for Cranbrook Art Museum (Time Machine Commercial Recording Studios), In The Dark :The Soul of Detroit compilation (Still Music), the Detroit Soul compilation (Unisex Recordings), and the title track for Recloose's Cardiology project (Planet E).
Malik has also released the recent singles Close to You, a collaboration with No Milk, featured on his Up All Night disc (Music Conception/Soundscape); Back 2 Chicago with Roy Davis, Jr. and Doc Link (King Street); Inside, a collaboration with John Arnold, featured on his Neighborhood Science project (Ubiquity Recordings); Step N2 My World (Malik Alston & Doc Link) and Changing Faces - EMan and Doc Link feat. Malik Alston (Liberate); Paige One and Sparkle, collaborations with Al McKenzie, featured on his A Reason To Be disc.
As the CEO of Truth Manifest Records, Malik expresses his creative vision in varied projects. Malik is honored to have received a nomination as 2005 Outstanding Electronic/Dance Writer Producer of the Year at the Detroit Music Awards, and a nomination as 2007 Best Male Jazz Vocalist from The Detroit Metro Area Musicians and Entertainers Association (DMAMEA).
Malik has worked with the Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with Scott West of A Fine Mess, Inc. He wrote original music for radio and television commercials for the 2006-2008 Home Team Campaign, featuring members of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, Lions and Shock. The campaign is geared to raise awareness and funds for regional Red Cross assistance programs.
Malik continues to produce and write for a number of national and international artists.
