I, honestly, started recording this song as a HUGE joke. Truth be told, I was procrastinating before a final. I had just finished a summer digital recording class during my sophomore year at university and I wanted to test the software I had just installed on my Mac.
I sent an email with the song to some of my closest friends who I thought might particularly get a kick out it. My friends and I spent a lot of time in high school making each other laugh by putting on a Mallu accent. It was our "thing!" My teachers at school, awesome Andies and Ungles (Aunties and Uncles), school bus drivers & the occasional Malayalam movies was always a source of constant fresh material for my girlfriends and I.
Before I knew it my friends started forwarding my email and seemed to playing it for their parents, who in-turn played it at work for their colleagues, who then proceeded to play it at family get-togethers.
And for some strange reason, completely beyond me, people seemed to find it amusing! At one point someone called me hysterically to tell me that the song was playing on a local radio station. And they were calling it the "Lola Kutty Song". Lola Kutty is Anuradha Menon, a popular television host on Channel V (who by the way is SUCH a riot, I love her).
My pal Sheetal (for reasons beyond me) seems to feel I have been robbed and need to copyright these tunes and reveal myself as the REAL Mallu Hotstepper! And not let Lola Kutty take all the credit. Poor Lola has no idea of the controversy she stirred up! Quite honestly, it doesn't bother who people seem to think sang the song.
It just completely blows my mind that even after 5 years, this temporary lapse in judgement, is STILL making it's rounds on forwards. Someone sent me a forward asking me to 'Check out this hilarious song!' and I nearly fell off my chair when I heard my voice playback.
So ...*deep sigh* ...this is for your Sheetal! Only because I promised you I would put this up!
There! I finally put a face to the voice.
My real music never got THIS much publicity! And that is why I think the notoriety the song gained is a gigantic joke the universe is playing on me. Isn't it Ironic?
