The Malo Mamas are making the world kinder, gentler and a heck of a lot more FUN!
The Malo Mamas are an International group of ladies who are all fans of singer/songwriter, Raul Malo. My name is Maria, (aka MariaChiara on the Raul Malo Forum) and I am the founder, (aka The Queen), of the Malo Mamas! A lot of folks ask me how the Malo Mamas came to be….well, it all began in the fall of 2006. Folks on the forum had started refer to "newbies" as “Malo Virgins” until they had attended their first live Raul show. Well, this led to a discussion on what we should call the newbies once they have been “devirginated”. After a few different names had been tossed around, our dear, sweet, MamaDel suggested that they be called "Malo Mamas". I loved the name immediately and that’s when I started thinking it would be fun to organize ourselves into a group…you know, like the Red Hat Society ladies or the Sweet Potato Queens? We could attend concerts together, have our own get-togethers when there are no concerts to attend and all the while we could be promoting Raul and his music. So I got a bunch of my friends together and we decided to go, en masse, to the Bakersfield concert ,
wearing buttons proclaiming our status as Malo Mamas. There were eight of us and we met up with other forum members (Melody and MamaDel with two of her friends) and the 12 of us all sat together for the show. We hooted and hollered, clapped and whistled, danced and swayed and had an absolute BLAST! We found out it was a whole lot more fun going to a show in a large group. The more the merrier! Our enthusiasm and energy was contagious and we really got the venue rockin’. Raul and the band even seemed to pick up on our energy and they brought down the house with three incredible encores that got a huge group of folks up and dancing in front of the stage! And that was how it all began….Since then ladies all over the world have begun calling themselves Malo Mamas, attending shows together or just having get-togethers (like the European Malo Mamas) as they wait for Raul to tour in their area. It is all about fun, friendship and good music!
Here on the Central Coast, we have organized ourselves into our own “chapter” and we call ourselves the California Central Coast Malo Mamas (or CCC Malo Mamas for short). It has been an incredible year for us. We have attended many, many shows together since that day in November 2006 including a five-day road trip this past summer where we saw Raul in concert four nights in a row!! We also booked, promoted and sold-out a show at the beautiful Templeton Performing Arts Center in Templeton, CA last May and hope to host TWO shows there in 2008! We have met so many awesome forum friends and fans at all the shows and our numbers keep growing after each show. At one of the shows this summer, Raul commented that the Malo Mamas need their own tour bus! We wholeheartedly agree!! Wouldn’t that be a blast?
We are a fun-loving group. We believe in living life to the fullest, finding the fun in every situation, and helping to make the world a better place through laughter
