  • Bio

A popular Malvern-based (Worcestershire) band who can be booked for concerts, workshops and English ceilidhs. Their style is dynamic, original and very foot-stomping infectious! Intricate musical arrangements are full of rhythmic drive and energy; humorous hornpipes, jaunty jigs, ripping reels, with a smattering of delicate bourrees, floaty waltzes and lyrical songs and harmony. The instrumental line-up is a little different (concertina, melodeon, hammered dulcimer, bass clarinet, clarinet, guitar, low whistles, recorder, bass, percussion, mandola, cuatro). They often have two young and very talented Irish dancers. Kieran Young has held range of titles: World Champion, Champion of Midlands, Great Britain and All Ireland (U13 Ceili and Figure). His sister, Laura, is also an All Ireland Champion (U15 Ceili and Figure). Debut CD - 'Over a Barrel'. More info on Malthouse's website (www.malthouse-passage.co.uk). CD review quotes: '...a ceilidh band that stand out...' fRoots Magazine. 'The new CD is excellent - they had me 'Over a Barrel'!' Frank Hennessey, BBC Radio Wales. '...they give their all in vital and refreshing performances that sparkle with infectiousness and responsive phrasing. All players display a well-developed sense of rhythm...deliciously sprung synchopations...deliriously joyful...an uplifting, feelgood disc... I just had to play it over again.' The Living Tradition Magazine. 'Malthouse Passage have a great sense of rhythm. A great sound... they're brilliant musicians.' Nonny James, BBC Hereford & Worcester.
