Summertime, 2002. After several highly influenced jams with best friend Jonny Phish, singer/songwriter Jeff Porter felt something familiar happening. Before it got away, Jeff called his brother from another Sandy Hancock, and spilled the beans. Well, After several months of writing and rehearsing Mama Hagglin played its first show, October 12th, 2003, at a club in Long Beach, CA.
The band's early three piece sound is said to be reminiscent of "The Cream".
In mid 2007, the trio grew by one, adding Jimmy Palmer on the piano & organ and vocals, which expanded the dynamics of the group and opened up new avenues for songwriting.
In early 2008 while recording VIBE, the band underwent another change, and welcomed Jerry Adamowicz as the bands new bass player. The sound is very dynamic, and big. A classic late 60s/early 70s inspired sound that is full of soulful vocals, strong instrumentals, driving, some times tribal beats and sweet harmonies.
DISCOGRAPHY:
LIVE 03'- 9 song live album,
TAKE ONE- 3 song demo,
THE GOODBYE WALTZ- 3 song single,
VIBE- 15 song, 1 hour, full production album
YESTERDAY:
The band has been fortunate enough to play with some great artists over the past few years which include TEN YEARS AFTER, ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS, MOUNTAIN, JOHNNY WINTER, .38 SPECIAL, BETH HART, GREAT WHITE, BROTHER, to name a few. This was to rub off nicely on Mama, as time went by. The material on VIBE & THE GOODBYE WALTZ show a matured side to the band, as it breaks away from the original harder three piece sound of the earlier LIVE 03. Lots of friends were in the studio with Mama laying down extra tracks. Some tracks include MANDOLIN, FULL HORN SECTION, CALLIOPE, CELLO, HARMONICA, FULL PERCUSSION SECTION, AND LOTS OF VOCALS. Mama even had STUDENTS FROM FRANK VESSELS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL sing on a track titled WAR. It was exciting to do.
TOMORROW:
Mama plans to have another release ready for the end of 2009, as work has already been started, and new material has been writen.
VIDEO!!!
2009 will find Mama posting Video to YouTube in the form of live and studio production as well as having new DVD's released. This will be another huge effort that will dwarf the making of VIBE. You will have to wait for it...
TOUR 2009:
Getting out on the road to meet fans and make new friends, will be a top goal for the band, as the fan base is no longer just a hometown afair. Currently, the band's fan base is almost as big in Korea and Denmark as it is here in the United States. Starting small with weekenders, the band hopes to reach out further and further. Don't be afraid to ask for a live show, you just might get it!
The song "The Goodbye Waltz" was over 40 years in the making, and took about a month to get out of Jeff's head. It was written to help get over things, and ditch old baggage that he'd been carrying.
The shoe seemed to have fit more than just Jeff... other people were being hit by the song and telling us about it. It was helping them... Well here it is, finally.
WE'D LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU THINK AS WELL!
