Bio
.......... ....Mandolin Jack: OIL GREASE AND DIESEL.. (Independent).. ....Acoustic country tunes from deepest London...... Not, as you might expect, an album of hard rocking trucking songs from a Good Ol’ Boy In A Stetson In The Deep South, but an album of acoustic-ish rural country from deepest London. Having started out in the 1970s in various bands, given up music for a while to work, very successfully, in film, ....Chris Tulloch aka Mandolin Jack.... is now returning to his first love and wryly summing up his musical life thus: ‘lots of fans and adulation / but not much remuneration.../ we pay our dues in strange venues / the agent never checks us / we don’t rock like ZZ Top / and we don’t come from Texas’ (..Texas..). Words that will strike a chord with many a musician, and indeed many of the words elsewhere will strike similar chords with listeners..... A man clearly in thrall to America and its music, Chris Tulloch pens odes to the joys of playing music on the porch (the cool rocking ..Homespun Country..), road trips (..White Wall Tires..) and the iconic eighteen wheelers of the highways (..Oil Grease And Diesel..) amongst others. He brings hints of classic rock’n’roll to the party too and the result is a testament to one man and his lifelong dreams. As well as his eponymous stringed instrument he plays harp and accordion and delivers plenty of lonesome picking, particularly on the driving ..Cumberland....... Unassuming but quietly solid, this is a hugely listenable album that’s as comfortable as a pair of old shoes and while it may not break any new ground it lovingly and effectively tills the well worn path of American roots music and in doing so delivers some new joys to the listener. ..JS ......(Maverick Magazine).... -
