About me:
The Manga African Dance Company
Manga African Dance, Inc. is a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 founded in 1990 by Ramatu Afegbua-Sabbatt and incorporated in the State of Georgia in 1999. The company's high-energy repertoire includes dances and rhythms from Ghana, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, Congo, South Africa and Nigeria. Based in Atlanta Georgia, Manga African Dance, Inc. performed in the 2003 and 2006 Georgia State University's World Music festival and was featured in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games.
The Founder and Artistic Director
Chief Princess Odufa Ramatu Afegbua-Sabbatt is a native Nigerian who began her career as a dancer, musician, and storyteller in elementary school. Since relocating to the U.S. in 1988, she has performed with the leading dance companies in Metro-Atlanta.
Committed to community-based arts education, Mrs. Afegbua-Sabbatt is listed on the rosters of the Fulton County School Arts Program, Georgia Council for the Arts’ Residency Artists Directory, and Young Audiences-Woodruff Arts Center.
For over a decade she has served as an instructor in Atlanta Ballet’s Dance Center for Education Program at the West End Performing Arts Center.
She has also received several awards for her community services. Some of these which include the 2003 Outstanding Woman of the Community, the Heritage Award for Outstanding Dedication to Our Children in 2004, nominated for the 2005 Hosea Williams Award for Community Activism, and the Bank of America Local Hero Award in 2006. She recently returned to Nigeria in 2005 where she was ordained with a chieftancy title and now retains the name Chief Odufa which means ‘one that comes with blessings’.
She performs at corporate and community events and is also featured in Manga’s Annual Cultural Festival (featuring Osun) in celebration of the Osun Festival in Nigeria.
