It is our pleasure to introduce to you, Manila Jeepney®, our very own reggae record label. This is our most intimate way to express ourselves as to how much the music means to us. Our critical objective is to produce quality reggae music for you to enjoy and with the help of many dedicated people, it has now become a reality.
In the beautiful country of the Philippines, we have an in-expensive form of transportation called the jeepney. Equivalent to Brooklyn's [New York] dollar van, people would hop on for a cheap fare to reach their destination.
Two aspects a jeepney portrays itself by is the colorfulness and creativity it carries. Many artists express themselves by "hooking up" these vehicles with their creativeness. The music heard in these jeepnies also became a status for new tunes to be played, and people thought of it as "hip".
Crowning Manila as the capital of the Philippines, where many jeepnies start their different journeys across cities, villages and towns, explains as to what our label characterizes. So we have the name "Manila Jeepney".
it is our honor and pleasure to present you reggae for humanity vol. 02 compilation consisting of 2 riddims titled, “prove it” and “lover & friend”. although we consider both riddims original manila jeepney creations, the influences for both are found during the golden era of reggae. the original version of “prove it” is a studio one classic from ken boothe called “you’re on my mind” with jackie mitto’s melodic and undeniable organ hook creating the base of the riddim track. “rock the rhythm” is a lovers rock favorite of ours. we love this tune so much, we just had to do our own version. from this dennis bovell produced janet kay tune, we have the “lover & friend” riddim. majority of the tunes in this release are in the lovers rock vein of reggae entirely produced by raul for liveandlovereggae.com. the executive producers are raul, raymond, jason & jun (manila jeepney). as one of the greatest producer, musician and engineer, russ d is responsible for all mixing and arranging.
each and every artist on this release was carefully chosen and selected by manila jeepney to make sure each singer would give us a song that represented the kind of reggae we strive for. jd smoothe, who gives us the title track for both riddims, along with screechy dan, shelene thomas and karen vibes represent the wonderful talent coming out of new york. the birth of lovers rock comes from england therefore the uk crew is well represented with peter hunnigale, nereus joseph, sylvia tella, antonio, tony roots, christine miller and gia. it is a great big honor for us to have two foundation reggae artists, al campbell, who sang the classic “gee baby” and jc lodge, who sang the joe gibbs produced scorcher “someone loves you honey”... give thanks to ossie hibbert for helping us voice these two. reggae music is very popular in japan and those who follow their reggae scene know they consist a huge amount of talented artists and musicians. we are blessed to work with machaco, one of the greatest singers from japan who has been singing for years and doing wonderful things for reggae music. finally, give thanks to fiona and roots daughtah for blessing the riddims with their wonderful vocals.
manila jeepney has always been dedicated in presenting listners a musical experience filled with meaning, feeling and soul. we are very proud and excited to share this release simply because we love reggae music. we started reggae for humanity to express the type of reggae we feel the world needs today... reggae with quality, class and style. we have much more music and work we want to share, so look out for future manila jeepney releases. for now, please enjoy reggae for humanity vol. 02.
Reggae For Humanity is the name for an ongoing series of works released by Manila Jeepney Records of Roots, Lovers Rock, Rub-A-Dub & Rock Steady music. Reggae For Humanity Vol. 1 consists of two riddims: Dark Skin Girls and Guide Us. The Dark Skin Girls Riddim is Manila Jeepney's version of the classic UK reggae hit "Black Skin Boy" by 15-16-17. Many of the songs on this riddim made it to numerous reggae charts, reviewed by magazines and web-sites, and received consistent radio play. Peter Hunnigale's "King Is Amazing" & Dona V's "Jerusalem" was very popular across Europe, while Luciano's "Just As I Am" made a great impact in Japan.
The Guide Us Riddim is an original roots reggae rhythm built by England's very own Russ D & The Disciples Rhythm Section. This riddim has the signature Disciples sound that is considered by many to be one of their best works. Tony Roots, admired to be one of the most original and conscious artists for today and the future, gives us the title track for the riddim. Mykal Rose, from the great Black Uhuru, gives us a nice roots tune called "Fly The Banner", while Chrisinti comes heartical with a tune called "Sunburnt Faces".
Many of the artists in this compilation have been through the Studio One camp and worked alongside Coxsone Dodd, owner and producer of Studio One records. Artists like JD Smoothe, Frankie Paul, Karen Vibes, Dona V and Carlton Livingston have all voiced for Studio One, and now they have songs for Manila Jeepney. Majority of the works done on Manila Jeepney was Recorded, Mixed & Engineered by Sidney Mills of Steel Pulse. This is Reggae For Humanity.
