About me:
I first saw Bharatha Natyam at the age of 2 in Madras, India at a performance by Padma Subramaniam hosted by the Lions Club of Madras where she received the title “Suderkodi”. My parents say I loved the music and movement and started dancing in the aisle but fell and cut my lip. Some kids from the Lions Club Youth Group told my mom and dad they would take care of me and they should keep watching the dance. At the end of the dance mom and dad asked were I was and the kids took them to the front of the auditiorium where I was sitting with Chief Guests - tamil movie star Shivaji Ganesan and movie star and famous dancer, Padmini Ramachandran! Shivaji Ganesan told mom and dad that he was so surprised to see such a little girl so enrapted in the dance performance that I didn’t even notice my cut lip. He suggested they should definitely take me for Bharatha Natyam dance classes and Padmini agreed!

I started Bharatha Natyam instructions at the age of 3 from Rajalakshmi Govindan, Salem, India.

In 1974, after moving to Philadelphia USA we learned that Padmini was teaching Bharatha Natyam in New York City. It was a dream come true to become her student! My parents drove to NYC every Saturday so I could learn from Padmini. I was Padmini’s disciple from 1974 to 1980 when my sister, Guna, and I had our Arangetram. Padmini was an incredible dancer and an inspiring teacher. I consider myself very fortunate to have received Bharatha Natyam instructions from Padmini and call her aunty.

My sister and I performed on several occasions in PA, NJ, NY. In Kansas in 78, we gave a 3hr dance recital with the centerpiece being the 45 minute dance “Ramayaman”. I also performed at the Miss India-USA competition held in Central Park NYC, India day celebrations attended by the mayor of Philadelphia, and Christmas celebrations attended by Cardinal Kroll of Philadelphia.

In the Indian Classical Dance Competition conducted by the Creative Indians Association in New Jersey 1978 I won second place with my performance of Bhavayami and in 1979 won first prize with a Thillana.

On Saturday September 13, 1980 Guna and I completed our Bharatha Natyam Arengetram performance in the Main Auditorium of Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.

After this we started teaching Bharata Natyam in Philadelphia and Lansdale. In 1990 I started graduate school for my PhD in Molecular Biology and only taught part time.

I now teach private and group lessons in Bharatha Natyam and bollywood style dance in Morrisville, PA. I offer lessons from introductory to advanced. I also enjoy choreography of both Hindu and Christian themes.

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone interested in Bharatha Natyam and dance in general.

I wake up and prepare to start my day; I open my door to hell and step in. As I walk through hell smoke and darkness blinds those who are all around me. I see souls walking in their flames of passions and pleasures, burning and screaming for their suffering to end. As I walk I see rays of light coming from the stars in the sky, yet those in darkness do not see it, or those who do don't grasp it, for their flames of passions and pleasures are too good to end. Those in this hell who find The Light and grasp it, ascend on a path to the stars, where suffering and pain ends. I wake up and prepare to start my day. I open my door to the world and step in. Those who have an ear let them understand.

Hi Ashley! Yes I have traveled alot for performances. My sister and have been all over the east coast and into Kansas and Kentucky. In Kansas we gave a three hour performance and there was a packed audience even though there was a huge snow storm.
They were sure Bharata Natyam fans!

Mani it's amazing that you were so young when you fell in love with Bharatanatyam. Your autobio is wonderful! The first time I saw B-natya I was 16 and two little girls were performing Alarippu. In those 3 minutes I said to myself "I am going to do that, I am going to learn this". It took 3 years before I finally started dance (couldn't afford it) and now I am finally on Pushpanjali lol. But I know it is an amazing journey and where my heart is.

Best wishes!

..

Humans are not perfect,
so their understanding cannot be perfect.

What cannot be perfect is flawed,
in the middle of flawed and perfect is right.

What is right cannot truly be right,
but what is not truly right is not truly wrong either.

All this brings rise to contradiction,
contradiction is the result of human understanding,
The result is the same with Truth,
when it comes to human understanding ~Amadeo~

The Holy GEETA says,

"Just as the blazing fire reduces the wood to ashes, similarly, the fire of SELF KNOWLEDGE reduces the bonds of all KARMAS to ashes...(Geeta 4/37)"

The Indian festivals of HOLY FIRE and the COLORS are on 22nd and 23ed hence, let us pray that this day may become the day of our self awareness and the fire of SELF KNOWLEDGE may releave us from our Karmic bonds and the COLORS may paint our lives in ONENESS with the NATURE and RAINBOW of POSITIVE THOUGHTS.
