Manitou, is the project of Jack Read , who came to ambient experimental music somewhat late in life. As he was doing environmental research just off the perimeter of Ford's River Rouge complex for his PhD dissertation he was struck with an overwhelming sonic epiphany. Sound worlds collided as he was hit with the bleeding noise of I-75, the toxic hum of the River Rouge plant and the gurgling of the nearby filtration ponds. He realized that while his environmental work was important, it wasn't nearly as important as the shrinking of the natural sound environment.
He had bumped into the theories of Acoustic Ecology in the course of his work, but steeped himself in it after his River Rouge experience. The River Rouge experience turned Manitou into a sonic activist, and his recordings and performance art installations are a response to the dwindling natural sound environments throughout the world.
Manitou's debut release, All Points North is being released by Matt Borghi and Jason Sloan at Slo.Bor Media. You can purchase downloads from Emusic HEREOr purchase the beautifully letterpress-packaged edition by Matt Borghi HERE
Hi Jack-- this is some excellent material... I can imagine cruising through a foggy Detroit on I-75 in the dark hours of late night/early morning. Thank you for introducing me to your music!
These are beautiful sonic spheres, your music is creating, opening up beautiful sceneries in my mind’s eye.. I can so relate to your love of nature, to it’s power in silence, it’s inspiring force, it’s relaxing athmosphere, yet at the same time filling you with a very unique energy..
And I can totally understand that this inspiration of yours has come through an experience with water.. My most favourite element, as well. This liquid meandering of a river.. Having been living on a small German island, as a child, I just need water.. I feel water .. I feel at home, or at least as closest as ever having come to that feeling, when standing on a shore..
Thank you so much for finding me, esp. as this is just your second day here. I feel flattered and really grateful for meeting you. Please take care of you, beautiful soul.. And if you like, let’s stay in touch..
