The Mississippi Artists and Producer's Coalition was founded in Jackson, MS in 2004 by Mississippi music veterans Kamikaze, Tony B., Azziatik Blakk, and Donnie Money. The Coalition was developed with the single goal of better promoting all of the state's musical talents regardless of genre. Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Spoken Word, Gospel, and Blues would be its focus. Ultimately, the aim was to establish a union for the state's artists that would include health benefits for working artists, job placement, and a retirement fund for artists after their music careers were over.
After its membership grew quickly to over 200. The coalition realized it had formed a solid voting block that encompassed every aspect of the community. Politicians and community leaders began to realize the strength of true street knowledge. Thus MAP began to get involved in more community related exploits: campaigns, fundraisers, benfits etc. MAP was instrumental in electing Jackson's new mayor in 2005 and in August of that year held the state's largest benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Over 30 of state's biggest musical names performed on two stages. In the end nearly $5000 was raised and given directly to victims of the storm. Musically, MAP has released two compilations: We Are The Streets Vol 1. and Vol 2. both of which were totally financed by member's monthly dues. Over 2000 copies were distributed to DJ's and Program directors throughout the state showing them the best of what Mississippi has to offer in talent.
Beginning in 2008, MAP begins again with a renewed focus on its original goals. Bringing in new members, educating them on the business of music, and promoting thier music. This year, however, we will be asking all members to get involved more frequently in the community. MAP has partnered up with the national Hip Hop Congress to add a community activism arm to MAP. This will allow musicians and non-musicians who wish to get more involved in the political process to use their voice for change.
