Influences
Dunno 'bout the influences, but here's what we've listened to the most:
- Brit rock of the 1990's
- Any athmospheric, melancholy stuff (Tori Amos, Björk, Radiohead, Landberk, etc.)
- Prog rock (the old giants like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Marillion as well as the new breed, like Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree, ...does Anathema count here?)
- Swedish melo-metal
- Some great emo punk bands
Maplesnow - Beautiful melodies, enchanting rhythms and melancholy soundscapes.
In July 2002, old friends Heikki and Mikko spent a weekend at Ruisrock, the oldest Finnish rock festival. Heikki’s previous band had just split up, Mikko’s old band had undergone a six-year evolution and was tangling up badly in constant line-up changes as the members were moving to different cities around Finland. However, neither of the guys felt like abandoning their rock ‘n roll dreams just yet. Heikki’s and Mikko’s tastes in music had always connected well, so the decision was sealed: ”let’s start a band together!”
Only one question remained, then: where to find a drummer? Mikko had recently met a drummer called Krispe and had jammed a couple of times with him. Heikki had only one question:
- Is he a cool guy to hang out with?
And the case was closed.
But what's in the name? The idea of "Maplesnow" is actually two-fold; the word is inspired by a snowfall, when really, really big snowflakes float through the air looking like maple leaves. When this kind of snowflakes land on beautiful, colourful maple leaves lying in the ground in late autumn, that’s where you find maplesnow in the purest form!
The word also captures the mood of Maplesnow's music: it combines the serene beauty and melancholy of summer turning into autumn with the cold harshness of the Finnish winter.
The music has grown and matured alongside with the band members and started to get more and more dark undertones. Although the pop flavour has never been completely lost, the real Maplesnow sound lies in the combination of sentimental melodies and energetic drive. You will recognise a Maplesnow song when you hear one, be it from the hard ‘n heavy guitar-dominated end of the scale, one of the etheric pop tunes or a groovy hit with a twist of jazz or disco…
A lot has taken place in the nearly five years since the first rehearsal session. A lot more is to come. Finally, it is time to release the Maplesnow debut album Shrapnel Soul.
“However strong your mind could ever be / The strongest will be your heart.”
