Mrs. Kinsella's Interests
|
| General | Books, music, movies, writing here and there, design and painting (watercolors mostly), a little photography, and cooking for sure. I'm continuing in my quest to develop my marginally acceptable cooking skills into something worthy of the praise I get from my family. I am presently enjoying the presence of my three newest family members. Ivy, Leif, and Fern. Yes... I named my plants. If I had anything better to do I'd be doing it, so for now I'm going to go mix up some plant food. Now if I can just get the cat to stop eating them. | | Music | I don't even know where to begin! I listen to a pretty good variety of stuff from classical to country. I have a pretty solid collection of mid to late 90's pop that always takes me back. Musical soundtracks go without saying (I was a Drama major), but I particularly love Sondheim. Paul Simon, The Beatles, James Taylor, and Norah Jones for driving around in the spring with my car windows rolled down. Jamie Cullum. The Killers. Coldplay. I've been told I have an old soul because I listen to much older stuff too... Elvis, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Etta James, Miles Davis. Oddly enough I've stopped listening to radio music altogether. I'm a bit of a NPR junkie to tell the truth and have been since right before the elections last November. It's an addiction I tell you. | | Movies | For the longest time I wouldn't play favorites with movies. I watch alot of them and don't really like to pick just one. Among my favorites are several movies that I never would have watched if a friend hadn't twisted my arm. I have Alex to thank for Boondock Saints and Memento, Dustin to thank for Shawn of the Dead and anything by Hayao Miyazaki. O Brother Where Art Thou (anything the Coen brothers worked on really), Drop Dead Gorgeous, and the collected works of Christopher Guest and Wes Anderson. The newest addition to my list is Thank You For Smoking. Really I'll watch anything once. | | Television | I still try not to watch too much television if I don't have to, and of course I have no TV whatsoever, I couldn't watch it if I wanted to. I could go on about it rotting the brain and being a total waste of time and electricity but some of my nearest and dearest friends are television enthusiasts and I don't feel the need to alienate them. If I had to nail down a favorite I'd say most of the shows on Food Network. | | Books | Anything by Terry Pratchett... cause you don't get much better than "Cuius testiculos habes, habeas cardia et cerebellum." I mean, right? Other random choices include Life of Pi, and most of the works of Jane Austen, Eoin Colfer and Garrison Keillor (odd combo I know). I'm also a pretty big fan of David Sedaris. Reading his stuff is fantastic, but if you really want the full effect you have to listen to him reading it. I laughed til I cried... then I just cried. I re-read Alice in Wonderland, A Dog's Life, and a few others at least once a year. One of the middle versions of Lord of the Yaks. Good Omens. There are others, but I have not the room to note them all. | | Heroes | Anyone who works in retail or customer service for a living. Waiters and Waitresses, Sales Associates, Customer Care Representatives, etc. These people are really the unsung heroes of our time. Also, the parents of children who do NOT destroy my store everytime they walk in. The people who put together my fabulous Apple computers. Martha Stewart. |

Mrs. Kinsella's Blurbs |
About me:
There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!
-- (Terry Pratchett, The Truth)
What else is there to say?

Who I'd like to meet:
All of my favorite authors (too many of them to name here), my great-grandmother for whom I was named, Alton Brown, and Martha Stewart (how does she do it?), Ira Glass, and Carl Kassell from Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me (cause I totally want to get his voice on my answering machine).
