About me:
Raised in Houston Texas, Marcell Murphy,has been reciting poetry for 10 years and mixes the condensed energy of his performances with surreal written images.
And is still a B-Boy to his heart
He is co-founder of the Houston Poetry Slam Team, promoting poetry slam as an art form in which poets compete against each other for the love of the audience; the scores can go to hell.
He is a co-founding member of the Black Out Arts Collective Houston Chapter. Blackout Arts Collective is a nation wide organization that promotes education and economic empowerment through the arts in communities of color.
He has performed all over the United States and in Jamaica and Canada. He was named the High Volume Musics Favorite Male poet of the year in 1999 and he was also named the Renaissance Entertainments Most Valuable Poet in 2001
As a former member of the Texas Southern University Debate team he competed in Speech and Debate and has acted in numerous stage plays throughout Houston and has been featured in numerous poetry venues around the United States.
With topics ranging from politics to love, he has captivated audiences across the country and abroad making a distinct impression every time he gets on stage.
By trade he is a Computer Technician, with writing as his passion, this self proclaimed book worm has a strong, obessive,down right scary adoration for the written and spoken word. He has been influenced by the great writers of the Black Arts Movement to the pioneers of dark and gritty free verse He hopes to spread the message of empowerment through his words and his actions.
