Florida State Representative Perry Thurston (Fort Lauderdale) and State Senator Tony Hill (Jacksonville) have introduced legislation to reverse Florida’s prohibition on breed-specific regulations. Currently, Florida law bans breed discrimination (the law does not apply to Miami-Dade County's long-standing ban on pit bull-type dogs).
Under House Bill 189 and Senate Bill 922, local governments would be allowed to enact regulations to ban the possession of Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and any number of other dog breeds. A similar effort was unsuccessful in the 2008 legislative session. With your help the bill will be unsuccessful again this year.

1. Contact Rep. Thurston and Sen. Hill and ask them to withdraw their bills. Please be polite!

Remind them that local governments in Florida are already free to adopt regulations for so-called "dangerous dogs". Banning a specific breed does not effectively address the problem of dangerous dogs and penalizes responsible dog guardians. There are more appropriate methods of curbing dangerous dog behavior, such as stopping the breeding of dogs for fighting and restricting the chaining of dogs.
2. Write or call your state legislators and ask them to vote NO on House Bill 189 and Senate Bill 922.

A bill entitled "Relating to Sexual Activities Involving Animals" has been introduced in the Florida legislature. If passed Florida would join the 30+ other U.S. states who have taken a proactive approach to protecting animals from sexual predation.
