Marc Schmolling, born 1972 in Munich, Germany, studied piano at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatorium in Munich with Larry Porter and Tizian Jost. He continued his studies at Stanford University in California under such internationally acclaimed figures as Horace Silver, Benny Green and Steve Coleman. After graduating in 1997, he has become a much asked-for pianist and active part of the german jazz scene.
Beside his solistic activities Marc Schmolling regularly performs with the saxophonist Wanja Slavin as well as with his trio with Jonas Westergaard(b) and Christian Lillinger (dr). His debut Trio-CD „Nostalgia Soul Ship“, released in 2003 with,received much positive feedback from the press, resulting in a co-production with the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting). These recordings were published by the Label Jazzwerkstatt Berlin-Brandenburg on the Cd "siebenundsechzigzwei" in December 2008.
Marc Schmolling moved to Berlin in September 2006. In October 2008 he received the first prize at the 8th Jazz & Blues Award Berlin for his project SONGS with the singer Iris Romen. He also is co-founder of the Jazzkollektiv Berlin.
In the course of his musical career, he has worked with numerous musicians such as Paulo Cardoso, Bill Elgart and many others. For several vocal ensembles e.g. Via Nova Chor Munich and for the conductor Benoit Fromanger Marc Schmolling works as composer and arranger.
From 2004 until 2006, he was lecturer for jazz piano at the Freies Musikzentrum in Munich. He has toured and performed throughout Germany, Hungary, Poland, Austria, France, Czech Republic, Brazil and Taiwan and taken part in numerous festivals and concert series such as the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts, Ostseejazz-Festival, Jazzfest München, Stuttgarter Jazztage, Jazzwoche Burghausen, Schloss Elmau, in the Steinway Haus Munich, in Studio 2 of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and others.
