Sounds Like
A motivated, diligent 21-year-old never resting on his laurels, with the following gear:
Howdy folks, my name's Marcus, and I'm a Senior at SUNY Oneonta, majoring in Urban and Regional Planning (Geography), and taking an assload of electives in music/Audio Arts Production (and yes, I am on FACEBOOK). I grew up in Manhattan up until the end of Sophomore year of HS, after which my family moved to upper Putnam County where I finished high school at Kennedy Catholic in Somers, which, shall we say, I had a mixed first impression of that gradually changed over time. I suppose I should be thankful that I moved; it's allowed me to have the space to start recording my music (and play it as loud as I want), not to mention the simple fact that I've always had a thing for solitude, and it's certainly readily available in my particular neck of the woods (literally, we own 10 acres of untouched forest). I still regularly visit the city, however, and conveniently enough, it's a 90 minute travel time on Metro North from the nearest station to GCT - and the nearest station happens to be a 5 minute drive away.
Anyway, I had a personal myspace page for many moons, but I figured it was high time I posted the fruits of my favorite hobby for all to enjoy. All of the above songs were recorded at my house and mixed and mastered by yours truly, unless otherwise noted. Enjoy!
Song Details(Note: You'll probably see a few random songs in the above Soundclick player that aren't listed below; I use it to post things over at the Andy Sneap forum, so they're usually short licks/clips/tone tests, but it doesn't mean they're not worth listening to!)
"Song for My Parents"
Written by: Marcus Hedwig
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (All electric and bass guitars, drum and synth programming)
The story: I composed this in honor of my parents 25th wedding anniversary celebration in early June 2007. Some highlights include the Star Trek: DS9 theme (a favorite show of ours) at 1:05, harmonic/whammy bugle calls at 1:48 and 3:36 (my Dad is a passionate signaling instrument historian), and the section from 2:03-2:58, during which I read a tribute while performing at the ceremony (and never again, thank you very much, it was personal). For the rest, I just SHHHHHHREDDED IT UP!!
"Racing the Night"
Written by: Marcus Hedwig
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (All electric and bass guitars, drum and synth programming)
The story: Much of the same inspirational background as "FBtS," though this one has the added distinction of being one of the first songs that I wrote while in my Freshman year at college back in '05-'06; this may not seem like a huge achievement, except that it was a pretty rough transition for me in the beginning, and composing most of the substance of this song was a very welcome sign that I was starting to settle in to the environment more. Once again, pitch-shifted guitar for the "bass," though this time, we've also got SOLOS!!!!!.
"Far Beyond the Stars"
Written by: Marcus Hedwig
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (All electric and bass guitars, drum and synth programming)
The story: Not much to tell about this one, except that I've had the intro riff and keyboard line kicking around for a couple of years, and I finally decided to flesh it out in a whole song over Christmas break 2005. I suppose this one definitely has a contemporary Gothenburg feel to it, but I'd like to think that there's just as much of my own unique flair. "Bass" is a pitch-shifted guitar, cuz I'm a tool. :)
"The Silent Rivals"
Written by: Marcus Hedwig, Kevin Jolly (music) / Greg Marder (vocals)
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (Rhythm guitars, right channel / middle solo and first of two end solos) / Kevin Jolly (Rhythm guitars, left channel / second of two end solos) / Greg Marder (Vocals) / Sara Baggerman (bass) / Pete Nowak (drums)
The story: My Audio Arts III final project; all the drums are natural (no sample replacement) with the exception of the kick, which is a sample we made of Pete's kick, just applied to every hit for consistency's sake. I used my JSX, and Kevin used his (meaning, my old) 5150 combo, both through my Bogner, and Sara used her bass and amp. Rock, rock on!
"Urinal Cake Blues (AKA Theory II Project 3)"
Written by: Marcus Hedwig
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (All electric and bass guitars, drum programming)
The story: I hate blues. Hate it, hate it, HATE IT. Not all blues, mind you; bebop blues is awesome, and some Van Halen stuff has bluesy touches. But anything that has that stupid hokey 1-4-5 feel and some retarded lyric repeated over and over ("OOh baby, I'm gonna make you mine, ooh baby I'm gonna make you mine, you a sexy baby, and I'm gonna love you all the time" or something equally infantile) makes me fume. So when my Theory II teacher told us that we had to do a blues project, I figured I'd do it MY way. I gave him his progression, and his goddamn repeated line...and then I metal-ed it up, as was inevitable. The SOLOS (I love doing that) admittedly were a blast to write, and the second especially is a major ode to EVH, Vai, and other whammy-bar wailers; now that my RG is Edge-Pro equipped, I've been going to town with it.
Oh, and sorry about all the clipping, this was when I was young and naive about the world of production, and I no longer have the original tracks for a "remaster." Enjoy!
"E-Riggs"
Written by: The Beatles (strings arranged by Aaron Soto, guitar parts by Marcus Hedwig, beat by Jeff AKA "Nice")
Performed by: Marcus Hedwig (All guitars) / Andrew, Anna, Amanda, Jenny, Billy (Upright bass, violin 2, viola, violin 1, cello; respectively) / Aaron Soto (Vocals) / Steve (manly vocals) / Nice (beat programming)
The story: My Audio Arts IV final project - it was Aaron's idea to do a...unique cover of Eleanor Rigby, and we all made our contributions (see above). Mixed and "mastered" (meaning, Waves L2'ed) by Aaron, Nice, myself, and John, our fourth group member. Rhythm guitars were my JSX, leads were my Pod.
I sold the head and cab, bought a new cab after relizing what I did. But Im sort of a fan of the Randall warhead sound I got. I got quite a unique sound from it, makes me happy. I'm working on getting some recording stuff now, trying to fit that around other bills.
Hi Marcus ! This is akarawd from the Ultimate Metal Forum. Please check out our new songs featuring Jeff Waters - Annihilator (Raptors), Chris Caffery (Ash Eyes), Where the Shadows are Free (Theodore Ziras) and let us know how you like'em ! Horns Up WD - Thanos
I'm on ultimatemetal, I'll take a look at that one too. I dont mind the bridge too much I just go steve vai style ;) Yeah I deffinatly like the 1570 for the 3 pick up selection, was thinking of throwing a full shred/or invader in the bridge and a jazz in the neck. I do lots of leads and some heavy rhythm. Reason for me getting the guitar would be my love of all music, obviously one guitar cant do them all. John Petrucci, Children of bodom, zepplin, to ac/dc. Which guitar are you selling btw?
After listening to "Silent Rivals" for the 100th time, I still can't get over how awesome the sound is! I'll miss playing with you this year man, good luck Rock Hard, Rock Free!
