Marcus Stephen Davison - singer/songwriter

Marcus Stephen Davison was born the second son of a second son. His family resided in the rural Mississippi River delta. When he was 6 months old, his aunt took him on a bus trip to Memphis, Tennessee. He really doesn’t remember the trip, but has been rambling around the world ever since.

Marcus started playing a Decca electric guitar in 1970. He later picked up several acoustic guitars; some notable one, an old Epiphone (rescued from a pawn shop on Navy Rd in Millington, TN), a Yamaha jumbo folk (acquired in Kadena, Okinawa), and a hand made flamenco guitar (built by Catalina Gil, wife of luthier Valeriano Bernal of Algodonales, Spain).

The only lessons he would get was from guitar books he borrowed, stole or embezzled and any of his mother’s piano books which might show an occasional guitar chord. Marcus began building his unique riffs and rhythms capitalizing from the many styles and techniques as he was exposed too them; yet, lyrics were still not coming along. He also got exposed to playing publicly when his Navy buddy, Jay Paxton, would drag him into Harpo’s near Memphis, TN and play old country tunes for beers.

He would work many day jobs and play at a local coffee shop every now and then. He also began to experiment with lyrics and wrote a few songs; which, have been, for the most part, lost over the years, other then a couple, which have survived on poor quality cassettes.

Marcus started driving a big truck and spent many days, weeks on the road where he would begin to seriously write songs. While out on the road, Marcus stopped at a music store and purchased a second hand Takamine® acoustic-electric, which he carried on the truck to pass the time and write.

Eventually, Marcus started recording his songs on equipment he bought piecemeal until he had accumulated enough to build a home digital studio. Moving from a small apartment, Marcus moved to a larger house and began to seriously record. Since his time was limited at home due to the proverbial day job, he mixed his debut CD in a Freightliner®. He would later do some re-mixing and master it at his home studio.

First Takes was released on February 25, 2009 after a year of delay. Originally titled ‘Ordinary Eccentrics’ and just 12 tracks, Marcus added three more tracks and included two songs he recorded with a St. Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster.

“i also did the last 2 tracks at one session, my first experience with ambient back tracks... those are the only 2 songs on the CD recorded with an electric guitar... a St. Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster with Humbuckers... anyway.. i put a mic out my front door and recorded my wind chimes during a thunderstorm, it caught the trains pulling out.. i live about a hundred yards/metres from a rail yard.. traffic going by... everything... i edited it down to a back track for the 2 songs...” excerpt form SL Enquirer interview Feb. 20, 2009

Track 13, Girl It’s You, was recorded with the old Epiphone miked with a Shure 57. All the other tracks were recorded with the second hand Takamine EG320C.

Currently Marcus is working on his second CD and expects singles to be available by late summer 2009.

Marcus Stephen Davison is currently available for bookings.
