was born in 1980. His musical education has been developing throughout playing oboe and piano towards composition and electroacoustic music. Since 2000 he lives in Germany, actively taking part in development of new musical scene in Hannover - the city from where he graduated as a composer.
Damian Marhulets is a founder and participant of many musical projects spread over stylistic variety, from classical music avant-garde, to Live-electronic improvisation. Among others, he established such groups as “Sky Scribe”, where jointly with other musicians he’s been creating music deriving from hard-core free-jazz improvisation’s tradition. This group, remaining widely open to collaboration with other musicians, owns programs created for the radio (NDR Hannover) as well as performances in the music & jazz clubs.
“Dak-tilde” and “2D-tilde” are two new live-electronic projects. It’s a collaboration between three performers and composers from Germany - Damian Marhulets, David Borges and Kostja Rapoport. Special interest they put on creating particular form of imrovisation with electronic instruments. Further aspects of theirs works consider the integration of vintage instruments, such as old fashion syntesizers and other electronic music tools. Among others, “Dak-tilde” already performed at Sprengel Museum Hannover, at Music21 contemporary music Festival in Lychow, Germany. The “2D-tilde” performance was a part of the “Long Night of Museums” in Hannover, Germany
As a composer, Damian Marhulets owns numerous accoustic pieces. The main idea that those pieces have been based on is sound symantic and aiming at new expression reached through reduction of audio-information. Damian considers his own music to be highly minimalistic, nevertheless, it’s not a minimalism based on comprehending music as a process. The primary thoughts he finds to be interesting can be briefly described as the concept of object and the sounds themselves beyond time perception. One of those pieces is “space/place/object” [soundcollection for 8 instruments], that bases on the relations between sound-object and place of performance. As against to a typical concert situation, this piece is composed for contemporary art museums and galleries, as a sort of live-performed sound installation with real musicians. The other important part of Damian Marhulets’ creativity is a co-working with designers and artists, as well as fashion scene. Being based on the works of other artists, he’s created such pieces as “Coke Spoon 2: 14 tracks for a discontinued object” and “Gold.Body. Penetration” (work in progress)
Apart from acoustic music, he creates and performs pieces for live-electronic. Such pieces like “Px”, “/temp_1 and “/temp_2 had appeared in a wide variety of contexts such as the Sprengel Museum and Kestner-Gesellschaft Gallerie in Hannover, Germany; the ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany; at the Re:New Festival in Copenhagen; at the contemporary Music Fesival in Witten, Germany and other venues. He also actively collaborated with filmmakers creating experimental movies and short clips, what entailed over 10 soundtracks, mainly for works created by a young German director Finn Ole-Neinrich.
Damian Marhulets’ new project called “Displaced Meanings” is about experimentall DJing and Turntablism. Making use of the traditional turntablism-setup extended by such new devices like Ms. Pinky, hardware synthesizer, FX-processor and other tools, he experiments with shifting “the content” from one form to another and deforming it, and finally, changing the form by affecting the content, that is semantic remix of initial material. The first “Displaced Meanings” program was performed at the electronic music Festival “Re:New 2008? in Copenhagen.
