For the past five years, Maria Antoinette Freeman, lyric soprano, has performed a variety of roles at Amato Opera Theatre, in New York City, under the baton of Maestro Anthony Amato. For the 2008-2009 season she will reprise the role of The Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, First Lady in The Magic Flute, Maritza in The Merry Widow, and Flora in La Traviata. In the 2007-2008 season she reprised the First Lady in The Magic Flute, and debuted the role of Leonora in Verdi's Il Trovatore. In the 2006-2007 season she debuted the role of The Countess in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and understudied Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Leonora in Verdi's La Forza del Destino. In 2005-2006 she debuted The High Priestess and covered Aida in Verdi's Aida, and debuted Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni. In previous seasons she sang Giannetta in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen, Marcellina in Mozart's Le nozzi di Figaro, and understudied Mimi and Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème. Other performances include Violetta in Verdi's La traviata, Desdemona in Verdi's Otello, the title role in Puccini's Tosca with Harlem Opera, and Echo in Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos with Liederkranz Opera. Ms. Freeman's prepared operatic repertoire is Liu in Puccini's Turandot, Mimi and Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème, Pamina and the First Lady in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, The Countess in Le Nozzi di Figaro and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Ms. Freeman's orchestral repertoire includes Berlioz' Les nuits d'ete; Strauss' Four Last Songs; Barber's Knoxville Summer of 1915; Handel's Messiah; Fauré's Requiem; Bach Cantata BWV 202 Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten, Bach Cantata BWV 51 Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!, Bach Matthäus-Passion BWV 244; Mozart concert opera: K. 528 "Bella mia fiamma...Resta, oh cara", Mozart's Exsultate jubilate; Villa-Lobos' Bachianas brasileiras; and Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. Ms. Freeman's concert repertoire consists of german lieder, french melodies, italian art songs and african-american spirituals. Ms. Freeman completed her Masters of Music Degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied voice with the late tenor Charles Bressler, opera with the late Lou Galterio, and coached with Gary Wedow, Nico Castel, and Dennis Helmrich. Ms. Freeman completed her Bachelors of Music Degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied voice with soprano Geraldine Martin, and was soloist and recording artist with the Conservatory Chorus and the Chamber Singers under the baton of Lorna Cooke DeVaron. She has sung in master classes with Eleanor Steber, Gerald Souzay, Hans Hotter, Martin Katz, Stephen Lord, Phyllis Curtain, Margo Garrett, Jay Lesenger, and Terri Decima. She has coached with Earl Buys, Glenn Morton, Jonathan Faiman, Tamara Cashour, and David Rebhun. Ms. Freeman has trained at such recognized vocal programs as the Blossom Music Festival and The Phyllis Curtain Seminar at Tanglewood, and participated in a number of concerts with the Professional Women's Singers Association where she was treasurer. A vocal technician and instructor, Ms. Freeman was professor of voice at the Church of Christ Bible Institute from 1997-2003. Ms. Freeman is a graduate of the Duke Ellington High School of the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, where she studied voice with soprano Monica Otal.
