Music
Ambition. These two words not only serve as her e-mail moniker, but
they truly summarize the driving force propelling the passion inside the heart
of this songstress. Bold and powerful, yet tender and sweet are words that only
begin to describe the embodiment of such a robust and soulful gift of song wrapped
ironically in a tiny frame. A legend-in-the-making, Marian Hickmon is poised
to become one of contemporary gospel music's most influential voices of
this generation.
Newcomer Marian
Hickmon's first solo project, Just Begun, endeavors
to reach heights unimaginable. With an intense sound that abundantly encompasses
such a broad genre of musical artistry (influences such as Kim Burrell,
the Clark Sisters, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, India Arie, Tye Tribbett,
Kierra Sheard, etc.), Marian's debut album has just the right variety
of music and anointing to be positioned at the top of the charts.
Born and raised
in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Marian Hickmon is known and loved as a sister, daughter,
friend, praise leader and a vocalist. Marian's contemporary sound was
developed with time, but her God-given talent was nurtured by singing in the
church. She began singing in the children's choir and later sang in the
adult choir. She also received choral training for two years as a member of
the Mississippi Delta Community College Show Choir.
Marian's
main influence comes from her father, Pastor Michael Hickmon. He trained Marian
at an early age to develop her gift by singing solos and taught her the importance
of having quality and control. Her parents can recall her singing when she first
began to talk. They were convinced that she had something special to share with
the world. She started out as a bright little girl with a big voice and carried
a spark of life like no other. She began performing before crowds at the tender
age of five and has not stopped yet: she has served as the opening act for such
gospel greats as Dorinda Clark-Cole, Kim Burrell, Shea Norman, Vickie Winans,
Rance Allen, Darrell Petties, and Kevin Davidson and the Voices.
As a young woman in her early twenties, Marian Hickmon realizes that her purpose
is to minister to people through song. She also wants to relay a message to
her peers that "it's ok to be different, be young, and have
fun: as long as your main desire is to please God. With a song in
her heart to bless the nations, Marian has only Just Begun
to see the great things that God has in store.
