More bio

Calexico fans will recognize Marianne as Madame to Joey Burns' lovestruck gold digger on Calexico's hit single, "Ballad of Cable Hogue" from their 2000 album "Hot Rail". She also duetted with then-husband Naïm Amor on the 2001 album "Tête A Tête/ABBC" by Amor/Belhom/Burns/Convertino.

A prolific lyricist in both English and French, her words are sung primarily by herself but also by Françoiz Breut, Howe Gelb, Fredda and Naïm Amor, with whom she also co-wrote the Amor Belhom Duo and Amor albums.

As a filmmaker, she has directed films for French TV, collaborating with director Robert Kramer and poster artist Robbie Conal, and directed the Giant Sand/Howe Gelb documentary "Drunken Bees".

As a multimedia performance artist with choreographer Ami Garmon, she was exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, France (Hiver de L'Amour), then got subsequently invited to be artist-in-residency and to perform at the Musée D'Art Contemporain, Marseille, France by Philippe Vergne (Walker Art Center), in Lisboa, Portugual and at the Paris Foundation Cartier. After this first exposure to performance art, Marianne put on a few haunted performances pieces in Tucson, Arizona, the downtown that had become her home by 1994. In 2009, Marianne and Ami reunited to share the stage in Berlin, Dortmund and the Arte Lounge TV show.

During the 2004 US presidential election, Marianne launched the Tucson Suffragettes, a gang of sexy downtown political vixens who went after "virgin voters", enlisting the help of Linda Rondstadt, Chuck Bowden, Shepard Fairey, Robbie Conal and the Tucson arts and music community. Now a full-time singer, Marianne, no longer hiding behind a camera or her words, wishes she could have sang with Jean Sablon but hopes she can still duet with Scott Walker one of these days.

In no particular order on the music side.... Marianne is featured, alongside Jane Birkin and Françoiz Breut on the 2007 "Filles Fragiles" CD compiled for Dutch label Essential Dance Music by Guuzbourg and the 2009 Universal Australia compilation "Ballade en France". Marianne contributes, alongside Devendra B. and Bill Callahan, to the CD tribute to American folksinger Kath Bloom by Australian label Chapter Music (Feb09) and to compilations that include the "Christmas In Tucson" CD produced by Olivier Mosset with tracks by Bob Log III and Al Foul. For that release, Marianne collaborated with Jonathan Richman's drummer Tommy Larkins to cover the 1980 British hit, "Stop The Cavalry". She also wrote an original Christmas song with Amparo Sanchez of Amparanoia, included in Germany specialty label Trikont's 2008 Christmas compilation. Le Pop Musik has included Marianne in their 2008 "Les Filles Le Pop" compilation and Virgin Australia will release a French-themed compilation with track "Les Draps Sourds". Finally, UK label Regular Beat Recordings released a split 7 inch vinyl with Alaska in Winter, featuring Beirut, on the flipside while Italian band Desing produced another split single, with artwork by Howe Gelb's daughter, Patsy. Again, from Italy, band Sea of Cortez and pianist Christian Ravaglioli collaborated with Marianne on a studio track in the spring 2009 in Tucson, leading to Marianne and Christian co-writing her second album, "L'Abandon", in 2010. A first 7 inch vinyl (4 tracks with bonus 11 tracks digital download) was self-released in the spring 2006, selling out shortly afterwards. Marianne has performed extensively with Tucson guitarist Matt Mitchell, recording tracks for compilations and their own amusement. The 11 tracks demos to "L'Entredeux", with Joey Burns on guitar, are available as album "Dedicated To Your Walls. May They Keep Blooming", both as AIFF CDr and on I-Tunes. France's prestigious Académie Charles Cros awarded "L'Entredeux" their Coup De Coeur 2009.

Marianne has been backed on tour by some of Tucson's finest: Sergio Mendoza, Brian Lopez, Clay Koweek, Arthur Vint, Andrew Collberg, Geoff Hidalgo, Naïm Amor, Marco Rosano, Thøger Lund, Connor Gallaher, Vicki Brown... as well as by Rob Hecht, Scott Tixier and Olivier Samouillan from outside of Tucson.

L'ENTREDEUX

Tucson-based, French-born singer and lyricist Marianne Dissard is very glad that her first album, "L'Entredeux", was co-written and produced by Calexico's frontman Joey Burns. He did all the hard work. She just brought him words and a mixtape of favorite songs she hoped would 'inform' her lyrics, and off he went. French-language album "L'Entredeux" was recorded in their hometown of Tucson, Arizona and mixed by Craig Schumacher at Wavelab Studio. The cast of collaborators was drawn from far and close: from Tucson, John Convertino (Calexico) on drums; Naïm Amor (who also composed 3 of the songs) and Matt Mitchell on guitars; singer Adrianne DeNike, violinists Vicki Brown, Rose Todaro and Michael Fan and Nick Luca on guitar. From the road, the east coast and across the Atlantic, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) on harmonica; Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio, Iron & Wine, Laurie Anderson) on piano, accordion, orchestron, cimbalom and organ; singer Sammy Decoster (Tornado). The end result of Joey's producing and arranging is an album where Chanson sweet talks Americana into serving Marianne's poetic lyrics and husky voice! With sweeping arrangements of strings and overdubs by brilliant collaborators, this is not just another Calexico collaboration. "L'Entredeux" is truly Marianne and Joey’s album, stemming from a long friendship that dates back to the early 90’s and a shared affinity for Mexican food, French wines, old adobe houses and the photographs of Gary Winogrand. Not to mention the recordings of Nick Drake, Nico, Serge Gainsbourg, Django Reinhardt and the western movies of Morricone, Peckinpah and [...] Keep reading here.

ENGLISH: ""Enchanting" Now Toronto/Canada "Fabulous. Stunning." Ottawa Xpress/Canada "She's just a damn good time." Seattle Weekly/USA "One of the most poignant and versatile live performers you could ever hope to stumble across. Whether she is crooning in the corner of a Tucson bar or fronting a five-piece collective, Dissard commands an audience unlike many others." Santa Barbara Independent/USA "Beautiful and coherent, understated and entrancing" Blurt Magazine/USA "Stunning Frenchwoman despite years of living in Tucson, she had great songs, a fine voice and excellent delivery. Very classy, but straightforward too. Hard to characterise, excellent" Radio3.CBC/Canada "Weds the cabaret/chanson tradition with Americana. Where such a mix could easily have come across as contrived in someone else's hands, Dissard makes both forms sound like they were meant for each other. French may be the language of love, but the emotional punch of the music comes from Dissard's delivery. So natural is her approach, in fact, that after a short time her French lyrics don't sound novel or even foreign at all. Clearly, Dissard isn't pandering to anyone's yen for exoticism. Instead, she plumbs for the soul of both traditions and re-invents them both." Rochester City Newspaper/USA "Unusual mixture of French and American Southwestern influences" Tribune Montréal/Canada "Striking in its ability to seamlessly fuse styles that seemed previously to be wholly disparate" Buffalo News/USA "Her stage performances are a seductive mingling of catchy melodies, with her deep, raspy voice emanating a haunting sense of longing." Art Voice Buffalo/USA "Heart-melting debut that beautifully melds Southwestern noir with the husky, unequivocal whisper of chanson. An intimate and amorous album. What sets Dissard apart from the rest of the chanteuses riding the Francophile wave is her delivery—subtle, slightly spitty and the most effective aphrodisiac since Benjamin Biolay’s Trash Yéyé." Philadelphia Weekly/USA "A fair presence, a true-to-form throaty alto, and enchanting French lyrics.Marianne's vocals have been called breathless, but that makes her out to be a lo-fi chanteuse a la premiere dame. I'd say she sounds more like a scaled downTetes Raides. Think of a female performer who embraces the poetry of Leonard Cohen and the litheness of a panther - that's Marianne Dissard. Live, she performs with an abandon that compliments Calexico's technique - not AIDS WOLF, try Ida Maria." Toronto Blog/Canada "The effect is magical" Democrat&Chronicle/USA "An enchanting listen" New Haven Advocate/USA "Something like ’70s import movie music. It is delightfully noncommercial and full of risks." San Diego Reader/USA "Pick of the Week: Her work has a lovely, mournful lilt, a sort of Parisian blues. Even those of us who don't speak French cannot help but be touched by the stark beauty of her phrasing." LA Weekly/USA "There is little to say here; if you don't fall in love with her from the moment she says hello, then you will have done by the time she finishes the first line of her first song, and if you're not melting by then, you have a swinging brick instead of a soul. The same kind of ache you get from Lambchop or Alice by Tom Waits- yet sounding like neither of them." Mitch & Murray/UK "Polished and thoughtful, French and sultry, smoky, beautiful and sad." Tucson Weekly/USA "Flush with bluesy overtones and a sultriness that doesn't veer into lounge-cheese territory." Ottawa Citizen/Canada "Seductive French lyrics, brooding ballads and a sultry, alternative jazz/neo-lounge vibe. Washington Post/USA

Lieblings-song: "Les Draps Sourds". Myself/Germany
