Any music worldwide with emotional depth and musical intelligence.
The first record in our house was Rimsky Korsokov's 'Sheharazade'; then came Beethoven's Fifth, Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, then The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary.
My first 45 was 'Satisfaction' by the Rolling Stones. My first album was Joni Mitchell's first.
I learned to play guitar from the tabulatures in a Leonard Cohen songbook.
I learned Travis picking listening to Leo Kottke and playing with friends. I learned to flatpick in Nashville.
And I continue to learn to be a better player from my amazing musician friends.

News! I've been nominated for the Canadian Folk Music Awards: Best Contemporary Singer. www.canadianfolkmusicawards.ca
The awards ceremony will be on
Sat. Nov.21 at the Canadian Museum of of Civilization, in Gatineau, Que. I'll be on tour in Alberta at that time, and magically, the Nov. 21 venue moved the date to the next night, so I can fly in for the Saturday night ceremony. This is very exciting for me. Thankyou CFMA.
My new CD, "PIRATE DAYS", was recorded here in Toronto over the past year at Fire Escape Recording, by producer Douglas Romanow, and mastered in Nashville by Hank Williams at Master Mix. I am very proud of this new body of work. Musicians on the album include Gary Craig / drums, John Dymond / bass, Rick Fines / slide guitar and dobro, Tim Bovaconti / electric guitars, Steve Briggs / guitar and mandolin, Don Reed / fiddle, Rosemary Phelan / vocals, myself on vocals, guitar, and mandola, Doug Romanow / accordian, piano, marxphone, and studio toy tinkering ambience. I was also blessed with a wonderful live choir, including gorgeous children's voices on "Train of Love", co-written with Tom Leighton. The CD design is by Patrick Duffy for "Attention" in Toronto. Master artist Paul Young allowed me to incorporate his exquisite and classic reclining nudes into the cd cover image. Russ Kominek got shots of an old schooner near Niagara-on-the-Lake. Patrick added the sails; I wanted her to be in full sail. Kristin Briggs finally got a good smiley shot of me.
People ask, "What does 'Pirate Days' mean?" I'm sure it means something different for everyone. For me, it talks about a life well-lived, and everything about that life worthy of being remembered. I think we all want to be remembered for something, we all want to matter, plain and simply. I live my life for beauty and expression, and have shunned the showbiz spotlight in the past in my endeavour to be truthful. The song sings of a woman's life on the edge, as pirate or highwayman desperado, provider, protector, lover, all the roles we play, to pull the veil from 'proper' and 'acceptable'. It's about the risk it takes to find happiness, or enlightenment. It's about the crazy youthful days, where excitement and recklessness can also turn to tragedy, all in the name of freedom. It's about the contrast between unrealized and unbridled passion. If you haven't had your Pirate Days, go and find them, and if you've survived yours, I hope you smile when you remember, with no regrets.
"I've had my pirate days, and my bandit ways
As good as any man
And under gypsy skies, let my hair tumble down to lie
With the very best of them"
I have been writing an performing for three decades now. I left the music business in 1992 to raise two amazing children, who are the absolute joy of my life, and only for whom I would tame my restless spirit. I retrained as an Expressive Arts Therapist and worked with the arts in healing settings; clinics, native reserves, schools. I was immersed in this world, and thought little of my old one. But, as is only right, I realized that healing was in the making of the art itself, and in my case, the making of music. I was pulled back to the music business, literally, and in 2002, I made my first recording in 20 yrs; 'In This Town'. It was a long climb back to reclaim my place, and another 7 years before 'Pirate Days' My road lust has returned, and I'm loving it. I hope to see you in my travels sometime soon.

Thanks Marianne, I just moved my computer into the kitchen/dining/sun room area, so that I can do even more multi-tasking...LOL When I go back to school in November, I'll need to be a bit more streamlined, and have easier access to things with less time. You know how it is. Listening to your songs as I re-organize all these wires, papers and rooms. What a wonderful voice you have. Keep entertaining all.
Wishing you and yours the best. Hugs and blessings, Celeste

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:
Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
