Right now I tour solo. I would love to have a guitar/mando/vocal accompanist. Down the road throw in a cello, double bass, harmonica, piano, drums.........
Influences
Any music worldwide with emotional depth and musical intelligence.
The first record in our house was Rimsky Korsokov's 'Sheharazade'; then came Beethoven's Fifth, Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, then The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary.
My first 45 was 'Satisfaction' by the Rolling Stones. My first album was Joni Mitchell's first.
I learned to play guitar from the tabulatures in a Leonard Cohen songbook.
I learned Travis picking listening to Leo Kottke and playing with friends. I learned to flatpick in Nashville.
Sounds Like
Marianne Girard.
I have always had a clear and clean soprano voice. It belies the life behind it.
I feel like messing it up, getting a whiskey rasp in it. Put the sound of real life into it.
I have just listened to your set on Folk Stage, aired as I hear it on XM Radio’s channel 15, The Village. Uncharacteristically, I stopped what I was doing (office work - easily and readily put aside), and listened to every ounce of it. I have followed acoustic music for years now, but rarely have I been gripped right away at first listen. Your style - voice, music and lyrics combined, blended into a singular effect - is distinctive, and quite evocative.
This is, then, simply a message of best wishes. I will look for your work, order it when I can, and hope to see your name continue to elevate through an acoustic landscape that is often bland and interchangeable.
Hey Marianne! Great to hear your rich voice and stellar songs in St. Andrews at the Home Routes concert and even greater to spend the next day with you! I hope the rest of your tour is going well as you slowly work you way home. I'm looking forward to that magic moment when we get to sing together. Don't forget...our door is always open! Angel
