Music
Anything that's not
repetitive, boring shit. ;-) I love to hear music that
gets me inspired or is totally unique. My all time heros
are Ben Harper, Jewel (early days), The Beatles, Cream,
Queen and Bob Dylan.
Television
hmmm I guess I like to watch
TV to tune out my brain every once and a while... Not
much good stuff at the moment.
Books
Most of the books by John
Wyndham (old sci-fi writer) and i guess other stuff
too.... hehe But Wyndham is cool!
In December 2007, Marianne and Jonathan just won the National Busking Competition "TILT"! They won first prize in "Nation's Best Walk By Act". They're prize money will be spent on their new album which will be produced this year.
Bother and sister Marianne and Jonathan Mettes are a very charismatic and dynamic duo who have been performing together since Jonathan's drum was bigger than him. They perform with a smile from their souls feel it is necessary to lead an interesting life to be able to feed and satisfy their creative hearts.
Marianne is truly a crafter of songs and creativity, as she assembles and designs her work by uniquely combining elements she picks up throughout her life. She engages audiences in awe as she dazzles them with her wide variety of songs, and shares tales of her heart’s ebb and flow and the struggles and joy of everyday life, as if she were reading from her diary. Marianne always keeps the audience on their toes, by varying the pace so that they are kept always smiling. She brings to life multiple, animated personalities as she dynamically uses her voice and facial expression in her improvised gibberish.
Performing regularly with her younger brother Jonathan, who slaps the most fantastic rhythms on his Djembe – not often seen in the fingertips of such a young musician. Marianne plays acoustic guitar, sings beautiful melodies and lyrics, while blowing sweet riffs on the harmonica, all while keeping time on a thumping stompbox and throws in the occasional kazoo. Their style consists of folk and roots, with a touch of jazz and blues, and their sets are always varied, containing "no boring bits!" Marianne and Jonathan have played at almost all the big and well-known venues and festivals in Brisbane and have an excellent reputation within the Brisbane music scene. For a list of past gigs, please go to: www.mariannemettes.com
Marianne completed her BFA at 19 years at QUT in 2004, majoring in song writing and digital art. Marianne was the first person to study and finish this unique course that seemed perfectly designed for her creative interests and needs. Marianne is currently self-recording her new album, to add to her other 4 albums and 2 DVDs. Marianne has composed music for dance choreographers as part of major dance shows, and also for several short and feature films. Marianne and Jonathan’s music was topping the charts in the top 10 on Triple J Unearthed last year.
She embraces and stretches her skills not only as a singer/songwriter, but also through such mediums as composition for dance and film, graphic design, sound engineering, digital and visual arts, dance, film and TV, fashion design, and web design.
With passion, expression and determination – it could not be said enough - this dynamic duo strives to create something new, which they can truly and wholly claim as their own. They keep audiences enthralled with catchy hooks, poetic lyrics and can’t-keep-your-toes-still and eyes-smiling rhythms. Marianne mixes conventional song writing with her individual sense of simplicity and eclectic quirkyness to entertain and engage people young and old.
You will never see these two carrying a frown, as they convey their love for what they do and they won’t stop creating till everyone is smiling with them.
Marianne and Jonathan will creep into your heart and warm your soul with messages deep from within theirs.

thanks for the comment, good to see that you are doing a few gigs. (which is a lot more than we are at the moment) - been spending a lot of time in my studio (too much time if that's possible). If you (or anyone else that reads this for that matter) ever need any audio production work done, I am available (and real cheap at the moment). Hope all is well, and drop me a message if you will ever be in Melbourne town.
hey Marianne, thanks for the add, and the kind words :)
yeah we should catch up some time, don't know if you're a theatre-type person but I'm performing my music live for a play called "The Knowing of Mary Poppins" at the Darlinghurst Theatre from the 22nd of May to the 13th of June (http://www.darlinghursttheatre.com/page/coming_soon.html). If you're back in town by then let us know and I could organise a couple of tix for you!
Oh and you had a link to your myspace page on that email you sent through the AFTRS hub, that's how I "found you." It's funny I've never seen you on campus, then again I never really see any of the radio people, that section of the building is shrouded in mystery for us screen people ;-)
anyway, good luck with your gigs and maybe I'll see you soon!
Dark Gypsy drones! Check out my site and download an album of original violin music entitled Transmissions from a Traveller! Also send me a message if anyone is interested in a hand-packaged CDr! Adam
