Back in 1995, I changed careers from being a meteorologist to a novelist when I began working on my first novel, POISON STUDY. Published ten years later in October 2005, POISON STUDY has gotten many great reviews, including a Starred Review in Publisher’s Weekly magazine. POISON STUDY has won the Compton Crook Award for best first book of 2005 given by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, and was a 2005 Book Sense pick.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University. Much to my chagrin, forecasting the weather wasn’t one of my skills. Writing, however, proved to be more enjoyable and I earned a Master of Arts degree in Writing from Seton Hill University.
Since becoming a writer, I have been busy attending conferences, teaching writing classes, and doing book events all over the United States and Canada.
My second book, MAGIC STUDY was a 2006 Book Sense pick and a RITA Award Finalist. And FIRE STUDY made the New York Times Bestsellers list!
While doing research for FIRE STUDY, I learned that working with glass requires deft coordination, arm strength, tons of patience, and a good partner—so now I have an extensive collection of misshapened paperweights, tumblers, and bowls.
Writing STORM GLASS, combined two things I enjoy learning about, the weather and glass. I would love to be a Stormdancer, and be able to tame the wind--especially during hurricane season.
The second book in the Glass Series is, SEA GLASS and it's due to hit the shelves on August 25, 2009.
A new series with a new world and characters is coming out in April 2010. INSIDE OUT is a science fiction novel, and I like to describe it as The City of Ember meets Logan's Run. For those too young to know, Logan's Run is a movie from 1976 starring Michael York and Farrah Fawcett. For those too old to know, City of Ember is an excellent young adult book by Jeanne Duprau (also made into a movie in 2008).
Traveling with my family is a wonderful distraction from writing; I love to cruise and have cruised to the Caribbean and Central America many times, and to Europe as well.
I am hard at work on my sixth "Study" novel, which will be the third Glass Book (untitled right now) which is due out in September 2010. After that book is done, I'll start working on OUTSIDE IN the second book in the Inside Series. It is tentatively scheduled for an April 2011 release.

Hey. I keep checking your appearances on your website and you never come over to the west coast...I was wondering if you ever planned on coming over to Washington since I would love to attend one of your book signings or readings.
Hi Maria, I hope you have a great time on your trip. I stopped by today to say how much I enjoyed Sea Glass and to share something that I think will make you laugh or at least smile. My daughter joined the Harlequin Teen panel and recieved a copy of Poison Study at the beginning of this week. She's been wanting to read Storm Glass but had to finish My Soul to Take (and Lose) first. Well, I talked her into reading Poison Study first since she had her own copy now. :) I explained that she would meet Opal eventually so she was happy. Yesterday morning she came downstairs in a grumbly mood, looked me square in the eye and said, "Mom, why didn't you warn me that I wouldn't be able to stop reading? Can I stay home from school so I can finish it , PLEEEEAAAASE."
I finished the poison study series and they r one of my favorite series. I especaily liked Poison Study. I hope i get to read Stormglass one of these days. I really enjoy your writing style. Its like u ended each chapter with suspence. U r really awesome.
You have really out done yourself with the new glass series. I bought both books on their respective release dates and simply devoured them. Amazing job. Thank you. Great books make my life complete. Keep writing, and I'll keep buying. Oh and I got a friend of mine hooked on them, and she now has one of her friends reading the study series while her mom just started Storm Glass.

"Finally a new satirical post-cyberpunk SF voice with elements of William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and the added dimensions of Tom Robbins." –Grant Garden, Amazon U.K.
Oh man Maria...hope all is well. Just finished Sea Glass and I loved it. Can't wait to see you again at KOP mall. Hopefully I'll bring Melissa again. And her sister too. I have to suffer and wait a whole year for Spy Glass to come out. But I'll be patient. Can't wait for Inside-Out too. That looks interesting.
Hi, I love the new glass series!!! I can't wait for the next book. I saw that my name was in Sea Glass. :) That was really cool!!! Are you going to write another series about this world after the glass series? I can't wait to read more!
I can't thank you enough for writing the Study series and now the Glass series. As soon as I picked up Poison Study, I fell in love with your writting. Each character you create, I feel for them. My favorite characters are Janco and Ari. I love how Janco is free living and ready for anything while Ari worries about every outcome.
I just finished the book Storm Glass and I simply loved it. Now I can't wait for Sea Glass to come out.
Well happy writting more exciting books, I just wanted you to know that you are one of my favorite authors of all time, along with Jane Austen. :)
Hey Maria, love the new website layout and the newsletter was great. Ice Study is awesome. Can't wait until Sea Glass comes out. We met when you were in Delaware (the book covers). Can't wait to meet you again. Hopefully in Lebanon, but if not then somewhere else.
I love the new website layout! and your better-late-than-never newsletter :) Ice Study is awesome, I missed Valek in Storm Glass
Speaking of newsletter,it mentioned a Vamp Scavenger Hunt, which i really want to do, but I can't find the blog with details... it is only 5:00 on the 10th, so maybe I'm jumping the gun. I know you're really busy. but I really want to get that ARC! I freaked when I saw you were writing a vampire story, as well as Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. So much goodness. :)
thanks for writing awesomeness, and I can't wait for more! -Sarah
