The risk of speaking about Marina Gallardo without speaking about her
There is a risk of speaking about Marina Gallardo without actually speaking about her. One could begin by either mentioning Remate - as her main confidant and principal defender, who also produced her first demo and was responsible for the sound in her debut album. - or by speaking about Paco Loco, who recorded and mixed "Working To Speak" in five days at his studios in El Puerto de Santa Maria, in the exact place where Marina was born. One could also mention Nathan James, who was responsible for mastering her album at Jigsaw studios, in New York. Other names also pop up such as Lisa Germano, Kristin Hersh, Lois, Liz Phair or Cat Power which combine an "easy" association of ideas: "female –sui generis- singer and songwriter, more or less alternative, who composes Rock that sounds like Folk, or Folk that sounds like Rock…so this may be what it sound like".
And once again, we come back to the beginning: We talk about Marina Gallardo without talking about her. This is the big mistake. Because in her first album, this 23 year old girl from Cadiz, speaks by herself completely. With her own voice. With authority. With an unique artistic maturity for a debutant or a person at her age. Paco Loco and Remate may have played most of the instruments of the album – second guitar, bass, electric violin, synthesizer, shaker, organ, pedal steel, etc. except for drums which were performed by Fernando Cañas, however, they seem to have followed Marina's plan at all times. This is an album in which the band seems to be another instrument that the artist uses to express her personality, her music and her world. Sneaking scratches of dry rock - "X Song", "Waved In The Tree", or "In a Frame Of My Real Temp"- in an album which is more than a caress "Working To Speak" is a debut that nobody expected but that everyone welcomes .
