Me Bio!
My existence started in a twilight graveyard of a city-suburb part of Chicago. My parents were Polish immigrants in the Sixties. They possessed a medieval form of Catholicism which they used to resist the "godless" Communist domination of their country during the cold war. My mother worked in a factory, had a firm mistrust of 'government' and legality and preferred to do things the black market way outside of officialdom. Dad worked as a tailor in a blues slum of the city, made polyester suits for Afro-American pimps. Unfortunately, his skills were used to cloth us, thus their is a picture of the three of us in matching polyester pimp suits on holiday sweating in the florida sun. My grandmother lived with us as a free nanny. She was a right laugh. She'd say you're young, pretty full of energy now, but you'll be old, gnarled and close to death like me before you know it. At five years old, it put things in perspective for me and definitely built character.
Polish was my first language and my first grasp of reality was the Catholic religion. Although I have no belief, the fear, pageantry, sensuality, bizarre rituals, cathartic confessions, evil and redemption still inform my personality. At an impressionable age, I embraced the faith until I discovered science fiction as a teenager. Now I think life is a computer game, and if there is a god he's like Bill Gates, a nerd with pens in his pocket. My parents have never got over the trauma of me leaving the church. Upon discovering I had stopped going to mass, outraged they asked me if I was a communist. My thirteen year old mind, not keen on Soviet style dictatorship or Marxist philosophy, assured them that was not the case.
I left my childhood home for University in Boston, studying history, which I enjoyed immensely. One spring break, I was lured to London. The seats on the tube were soft, and coloured with out of date patterns from the 70's. My one night out found me locked out of my accomodation and very pissed, I ran into a gentleman in 7 Eleven. He confessed his girlfriend was a beautiful model who was in Japan.Took me to his posh flat and let me kip on his sofa. Reflecting on this trip, I knew I had to go back to the UK.
An opportunity presented itself in an exchange program I eagerly embraced. Within a year, I was living in Earls Court with a bunch of Americans. Anxious to meet 'real English folks', I went to night clubs on my own. Eventually, I discovered the best way to make friends was by going to the same pub every night. In Little Britain, people warmed to you through drink and familiarity. After my program finished, I left to become a homeless squatter. I lived an impoverished bohemian lifestyle with musicians and artists. When recounting these times, I'd get misty eyed people exclaiming, "how romantic". The truth was less picturesque, queuing for Hare Krishna meals, scouring the vegetable market for thrown out produce for dinner, and shivering in a room without heating during winter.
In order to stay in the country, I proposed to a chap while he was on a hallucinogenic experience. He sobered up and proved an upstanding fellow, kept his promise and married me and I became a UK citizen. A few years later, we divorced amicably. To earn money, I became a life model in art schools, generally not a bad profession, but strange things happen in the life of a muse. One gentleman who painted me observed that I would look rather morose when posing. He had a portrait of me on his kitchen wall. He explained, that when he felt his spirits drop he would look at this picture. Apparently, I looked so miserable in it that it cheered him up no end!
I upgraded to rented accomodation and fell into some film work due to a lack of Eastern Europeans in the industry a few years ago. While trying to pursue this profession, I worked in promotions. If you see some leafleters in a train station or samplers giving freebies away, be nice to them as they are probably struggling actors, dancers or musicians. . I will never do a regular nine to five, truly I'm not built for this path. I wish to do something creative.
