Influences
At Cass Technical High School, Hayden was introduced to jazz and fell in love with it after an instructor brought in renowned artist Marcus Belgrave to teach students about theory and technique.
Hayden is a graduate of University of Michigan and has studied bass with Stephen Molina, Acting Principal, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Virginia Bodman, Professor Emerita, Michigan State University. An early lover of jazz, Hayden was mentored by master trumpeter Belgrave and began performing jazz at the age of 15. She has performed with such jazz luminaries as Lionel Hampton, Hank Jones, Steve Turre, Frank Foster, and Joe Williams.
Hayden had entered a summer program that featured Belgrave, Wendell Harrison and Harold McKinney as instructors. She learned jazz from musicians who were on stage with the legends of the business and along with their knowledge came firsthand insight into the lives of the artists — what they were like and how they approached performing. That type of instruction is priceless.
“That’s how we learned to play music,” says Hayden, “It’s a really nice thing to come from Detroit, during that time, because you got to learn jazz in a really authentic way. You got it right from the source.”
Hayden is a faculty member at the University of Michigan. She has a bachelor’s degree from U of M and a graduate degree from Michigan State University.

"Visions" is the debut solo recording for bassist Marion Hayden. Hailing from Detroit, Marion co-founder of the jazz band "Straight Ahead". She brings a fiery soul to the bass, with an authentic style, while maintaining originality. Bobby Jackson of WCPN-FM, Cleveland, OH interviewed Marion and provides the remaining remarks. Said Hayden, "I've had some thoughts about the music that I wanted to express for a long time. This has been a maturation process for me. I'm at a point in my life where I have something personal to say in musical terms. This recording represents my attempt at just starting to get that It represents the tip of the iceberg musically speaking, of where I've been, where I'm coming from, what my musical history has been and what my taste are." These are the words of a poised and confident Marion Hayden who speaks with the candor of someone who has lived some, and has traveled down the road a bit as a veteran musician. The creation of this solo project has allowed Hayden to explore her own music voice in a more detailed way.

Hayden's premiere date is a well balanced menu of tunes rendered by musicians that execute the material with a chemistry simpatico, allowing each member of the group to deliver their best - both individually and collectively. Her vision allows each member of this date a liberal amount of space to paint their musical ideas on the canvas she's organized. Hayden comments, "Charles Mingus was a very strong personality and composer as a band leader, but he didn't feel the need to play every tune as a bass feature. He really liked to paint concepts utilizing each member of his band." Hayden takes that philosophy and works it masterfully on this date. It's this concept that allows the music to shine brightest, as opposed to any individual. The group is a mostly veteran ensemble including trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, Wendell Harrison, co-producer, on tenor sax and clarinet, trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Kirk Lightsey, drummer Ralph Peterson and relative newcomer Rob Pipho on vibes. From the bass chair it is apparent Hayden is comfortable taking the lead in a soloing context. However, her passions and forte are grounded in doing what the bass does in most ensemble situations; comping and rhythm section playing. These are areas of expertise that shine brightly. The compliment of Lightsey and Peterson's working and stretching in the rhythm section allows Hayden to incorporate that sensibility to its highest degree.

Ms. Hayden I would like to thank you for adding me to your friends list, I am deeply honored. And I noticed that the song on your first track is called "Mr. Kenyatta. Well I had the honor of playing Latin Percussions for a gentleman back in the 80's in Greenwich, Connecticut. And he played the Sax, his name was Robin Kenyatta. My question is there any similarity?
