MARK AND BEVERLY DAVIS: Ayres and Dances for Two Guitars
Original contemporary works for classical guitar duo inspired by melodic and rhythmic elements of folk song from around the world, ranging from the peaceful to the passionate.
Mark and Beverly Davis have performed together since 2001. Their repertoire consists of pieces they have chosen for musical interest and emotional depth, drawing from the international repertoire for two guitars, including traditional songs of the British Isles, pieces from the Spanish tradition by Halfter and Soler, and contemporary compositions. Most recently they have added mandolin and guitar duets from the French, Brazilian and American traditions. Mark and Beverly Davis have performed in concerts in New England, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Australia. While attending the Nurtingen Guitar Festival 2004, they performed in the world premiere of ‘Concertino de Nurtingen’ by the noted French guitarist/composer Roland Dyens. In January 2008, the couple performed at the FAME convention in Sydney, Australia. In July 2008 the duo performed the world premiere of "Flowers of Spain" by the American composer John Craton. A concerto in six movements for two guitars and mandolin orchestra, this piece was commissioned by Alex Timmerman, director of Het Consort (Zwolle, NL) who also conducted the premiere.
For more than three decades Mark Davis has been a leader in the field of plucked string music, known equally for his work as a guitarist, conductor and educator. Mr. Davis began his guitar studies with Hibbard Perry of Providence, and later became a protégé of the German guitarist/conductor Siegfried Behrend, studying at his annual summer classes in Ahlmuhltal and performing under his direction in the Deutsches Zupforchester. Mr. Davis appears on many CD recordings, including the Grammy-nominated ‘Vienna Nocturne’ (North Star Records). His international appearances include the Festival Internacional Musica de Plettro in Spain, and the Kobe International Music Festival. Pieces written for Mr. Davis include the Suite No. 6 by Guido Santorsola and Suite, op. 242 by Ernst Krenek. Mark Davis is the music director of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra, one of the leading plucked string ensembles in the U.S., with a reputation for championing original contemporary compositions. Mr. Davis teaches at the Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island, where he directs a multi-level guitar ensemble program.
Beverly Davis studied the classical guitar with Reed Desrosier at Keene State College, and performs with the Providence Mandolin Orchestra. As a member of this organization, she has performed in concerts in Germany, France, Luxembourg, Canada, and the U.S. Festival appearances include the Internacional Musica de Plectro festival in Rioja, the Kennedy Center, Place d'Armes (Luxembourg), Oberbayerisches Zupforchester Festival (Munich), and the CMSA annual conventions in Washington, Louisville, Providence, and Toronto.

Hi, and thanks for the friendship! The Danish composer Per Nørgård's music has been much on my mind the past few years. Arguably the most important now living Scandinavian composer also has a remarkable output for the guitar. I spent a couple of years working with the composer on this repertoire, spanning from 1973 to 2000, in order to embrace the emerging performance practice associated with his work.
I have just uploaded 10 new tracks, all taken from "Tales From the North", my double CD box with the complete guitar works of Danish composer Per Nørgård. Also, in my latest blog you will find recent reviews of this release.
For further reading about the composer, this is an excellent website, with articles by a series of scholars and performers that have dedicated much study to his work:

Have you been in contact with Alon? Name the date and I'm there. If it doesn't work out with Alon and the Vivaldi G Major, I can come down and do a solo thing. Looking forward to hearing from you! --
