The profile's in the name of Markeroni, the Gentle Art of Landmark-Snarfing but I answer to Linda as well.
I hunt historical markers down to their lair. Some time ago I was doing a motorcycle treasure hunt to find historical markers while training for a month-long solo motorcycle tour. Unfortunately two of my gears broke days before departure, so there went the road trip. Poot.
I had a bunch of energy left over and I'd already observed that markers could move around at night. I figured that since I couldn't go on a big trip, lots of little ones would be better and decided to visit all the California state historic landmarks (1149 or so to date). I would set up a site to log my visits to the markers and provide accurate information about where they are.
And then I discovered that every state in the USA (not to mention Canadian provinces and more) had their own landmark and marker systems. Whee. The project abruptly ballooned way out of control and at the time of writing there are over 90,000 landmarks (not all historical markers) in the Markeroni database for people to find.
It's fun and remarkably addictive. What started off as a simple treasure hunt has become a passion and fascination for local history. :)
Other stuff: I'm English, live in northern California, married, no kids, one motorcycle, two cats. When I'm not tracking historical markers and historic landmarks down to their lair, I'm riding, reading, traveling, writing, or playing with the cats. I'm a webmaster and writer -- motorcycle author, freelancer, and prolific blogger.
