I'm a strong believer that no matter how cool a riff you think you came up with, most likely there was something that lead you down the path- either a blatant influence, or a distant memory locked away that comes out through ones music unprovoked, in a twisted derivation that can be claimed as one's own.
Some of my influences are very appearant when one listens to my music, while others are more buried in the mix :-).......
